Your complete guide to getting a driving licence in 2026
I remember what it feels like before you start driving. You want the freedom, but you have no idea where to begin.
Every learner I teach starts in exactly that place. So here’s the whole journey, start to finish.
1. Get your provisional licence
Apply on GOV.UK for £34. You can apply from 15 years 9 months and drive a car from 17.
2. Start lessons
You don’t need to pass your theory first. Feeling nervous in the first few lessons is normal. It passes quicker than you think.
3. Pass your theory test
£23. Multiple choice and hazard perception. You need this before you can book your practical, and your pass lasts 2 years.
4. Book your practical test
You now have to book it yourself on GOV.UK. Your instructor can’t do it for you. You only get 2 changes per booking, so pick your date carefully. The official fee is £62 on weekdays and £75 for evenings, weekends and bank holidays. Never pay anyone more than that.
5. Get test ready
Mock tests, manoeuvres, show me/tell me questions and independent driving. The test is about 40 minutes. You can pass with up to 15 minor faults, but one serious or dangerous fault is a fail.
6. Pass and drive on your own
Get insured before you drive. And take care: 6 points in your first 2 years and you lose your licence.
Where most learners struggle:
• Booking the test before they’re ready
• Long gaps between lessons
• Leaving theory to the last minute
• Nerves on test day
None of these mean you can’t do it. They just mean you need a plan and someone patient beside you.
That’s what I do at Sang Driving School. Automatic lessons across Dartford, Erith, Slade Green, Belvedere, Crayford, Bexley, Sidcup, Welling, Plumstead, Stone, Greenhithe and the surrounding areas.
