I don't share statistics like this to frighten young drivers. I share them because we need to ask what more we can do to change them.

As driving instructors, I believe we have an important part to play.

Learning to drive shouldn't simply be about preparing someone to pass a driving test. Training needs to be as close to real-life driving as we can reasonably make it.

That means experiencing different roads, speeds, weather and traffic conditions. It means learning to deal with distractions, pressure from other road users, rural roads, dual carriageways and unfamiliar situations.

But most importantly, it's about developing the ability to recognise risk, anticipate what could happen next and make good decisions independently.

Because one day we won't be sitting next to them.
The real goal isn't just a driving licence.

It's giving a new driver the skills and mindset to stay safe for life.

That's where I believe we, as driving instructors, can make a difference.

DRUG DRIVING HAS NOW OVERTAKEN DRINK DRIVING

New figures show that more drug-driving endorsements were added to UK driving licences in 2025 than equivalent drink-driving endorsements.

30,707 for drug driving.

29,769 for drink driving.

Drug-driving offences have increased by 28% since 2022.

Nearly one in five of those endorsements involved drivers aged between 17 and 24, even though that age group makes up only a small proportion of licence holders.

But perhaps the most worrying part is the attitude behind it.

Recent research found that 41% of young men believed it was acceptable to drive after taking drugs if they “felt fine.”
Feeling fine does not mean you are safe.

You cannot reliably judge your own reaction times, coordination, perception or concentration after taking drugs.

Cannabis does not make you a safer or more cautious driver.

Co***ne does not sober you up.

Being used to a drug does not make you immune to impairment.

We have spent years making drink driving socially unacceptable.

Have we failed to make the message about drug driving just as clear?

Drug driving is not clever, harmless or just something people do. It can take a licence, a career, a life or somebody else’s life.

Are We Asking Too Much of Driving Instructors… or Just Not Understanding the Job?

Everyone thinks they know what we do.
Sit there.
Give directions.
Get someone through a test.

Simple.
That version of the job does not exist anymore.

Every lesson is pressure.
Real roads.
Real risk.
Real consequences.

We are not just watching traffic.
We are predicting it.
Preventing it.
Intervening in seconds when it goes wrong.

And at the same time…
We are managing anxiety.
Panic.
Overthinking.
Confidence that disappears mid-roundabout.

We are adapting for neurodivergent learners.
Rebuilding people after collisions.
Supporting adults who have not driven in years.
Sitting beside someone whose hands are shaking before the engine even starts.

But here is the part no one talks about.
We are expected to do all of that…
calmly…
consistently…
professionally…

While the world outside the car gets worse.
🚘 Costs rising
⏰ Test delays stretching months
📱 Drivers distracted and impatient
🧠 Learners under more pressure than ever

And still…
People think we are “just instructors.”

No.
We are risk managers.
We are decision makers.
We are the barrier between a mistake and a collision.

And most of it goes unseen.
So next time you get frustrated behind a learner car, ask yourself this:

Would you want that responsibility?
Would you want to sit there, knowing one missed moment could change everything?

This is not just a job anymore.
It is responsibility at a level most people will never experience.

It deserves more respect than it gets.

🚔 The NPCC Operation Spotlight and Fatal 5 campaign starts today.

Throughout this month, police forces across the UK will be focusing on the Fatal 5 , the five behaviours that are responsible for a significant number of people being killed or seriously injured on our roads.

The Fatal 5 are:

🚫 Drink or drug driving.
🚗 Speeding.
🔒 Not wearing a seatbelt.
📱 Using a mobile phone behind the wheel.
⚠️ Careless or dangerous driving.

None of these are “accidents waiting to happen.”

They are choices.

Every time we get behind the wheel, we make decisions. Most journeys end safely because we make good ones. But it only takes one poor decision to change lives forever.

Whether you’re driving five minutes to the shops or setting off on a long journey, take a moment before you leave.

✔️ Put your seatbelt on.
✔️ Put your phone away.
✔️ Stick to the speed limit and drive to the conditions.
✔️ Never drive after drink or drugs.
✔️ Stay focused, patient and considerate of everyone sharing the road.

Road safety isn’t just about avoiding points or fines.

It’s about making sure that everyone gets home safely.

Let’s all play our part.

❤️ Arrive safely.
Nothing else matters.
