A LETTER TO EVERY DRIVER WHO HATES LEARNERS

To the driver who sighs when they see an L plate. To the one who overtakes harshly. To the one who drives so close they think it will somehow make the learner go faster.

Lets talk about what might be happening inside that car.

That learner could be on their first lesson on a busy road.
They might have spent weeks practising on quiet streets and only just found
the courage to tackle this one.
They could be dreading the next junction because they’re worried about stalling, while trying to remember their mirrors, signals, gears, steering and speed all at once.

What you see as “holding you up” could be someone’s biggest achievement this week. What you call “too slow” could be someone learning to stay in control.

Every confident driver was once a learner. That includes you, whether you remember the nerves or not.

So the next time you see an L plate, take a breath and give them room. Driving close won’t make them learn faster. It might make a difficult moment harder.

You’re sharing the road with someone’s son, daughter, parent or friend. Give them the patience you would want another driver to show someone you love.
