As you say the weather can’t be controlled, but for me as a first time visitor to the IoM it was an enjoyable experience in great company.

Please thank Martin for his light touch guidance around the island and through the event — despite the rain we actually saw and did a lot of what the island has to offer.

Best regards,
John

Although the weather was against us 90% of the trip it didn’t spoil the fun or dampen the spirits. Superbly organised trip, great bunch of people, amazing routes and roads led by Martin whose knowledge is second to none. If you’ve not been before I would definitely recommend it, the selected restaurants were terrific and all within walking distance of the hotel, plus the museum visits and tour of the island were brilliant!

Thank you again and hope to join you for another one!

Fantastic trip — Martin and the team did an excellent job organising us and keeping us engaged despite the weather. Restaurant choices were particularly memorable!

Would certainly recommend and do it again.

Comforting knowing there is a full team behind you to deal with any glitches — the entire trip was effortless. Thank you all!

Very well organised trip to the TT, from start to finish. I would highlight a special thank you to Martin, as an outstanding tour guide with the patience and calmness that made the whole experience thoroughly enjoyable.

I had a fantastic time. Didn’t take that many pictures, as so many other people were taking so many. I just sat back and enjoyed the spectacle of the TT.

The weather wasn’t as good as it could’ve been, but it didn’t dampen my enjoyment of the event.

I’d like to thank you and MotoJoe for such a fantastic trip together. I enjoyed the company, the venue, hotel food — everything about the trip was just great.

Lastly, a huge thank you to Martin who made everything work so perfectly — he really is the ultimate professional.

What a trip! It was meant to be a one-off on the bucket list, but it looks like it’s under my skin now!

I’ll most certainly be heading back with you guys for another TT — or tour for that matter… All we had to do was turn up and keep up — everything else was done for us!
The full trip from start to finish was epic!

Martin made sure every detail had been thought about, and the choice of roads to and from each location were excellent. The early set-up of the WhatsApp group was very handy for information prior to and during the tour. Can’t fault a thing! From the choice of restaurants to touring around the island and of course watching the racing — all first class!

Given everything went so smoothly, I can only guess that Martin and the team around MotoJoe put a massive amount of effort into making these trips truly memorable.
A great bunch of guys too! And once we had some beers in the evening, we all bonded like long-lost friends — great craic.

Weather was a bit soggy, but that just made our wet-weather riding improve, ha!
I’d certainly recommend you guys to anyone, and can’t thank Martin and the extended team at MotoJoe enough for such a class week at the TT… Thanks again, Amy — and see you all on a bike tour soon.

E I L E A N D O N A N C A S T L E

The name Eilean Donan, or island of Donan, is suggested to be named after the 6th century Irish Saint, Bishop Donan who came to Scotland around 580 AD.

There are several churches dedicated to Donan in the area and it is probably that he formed a small cell or community on the island all the way back in the late 7th century.

The first fortified structure was built on the island in the early 13th century as a defensive measure, protecting the lands of Kintail against the Vikings who raided, settled and controlled much of the North of Scotland and the Western Isles between 800 and 1266.

From the mid 13th century, this area was the quite seperate “Sea Kingdom” of the Lord of the Isles where the sea was the main highway and the power of feuding clan chiefs was counted by the number of men and galleys or “birlinns” at their disposal.

Over the centuries, the castle itself has changed in size. The medieval castle was likely the largest, with towers and a curtain wall that encompassed nearly the entire island.

Around the end of the 14th century the area of the castle was reduced to about a fifth of its original size and, although the reason is unclear, it probably relates to the number of people required to defend the structure.

Eilean Donan also played a role in the Jacobite risings of the 17th and 18th centuries, which ultimately culminated in the castle’s destruction.

In 1719 the castle was garrisoned by 46 Spanish soldiers who were supporting the Jacobites. They had established a magazine of gunpowder, and were awaiting the delivery of weapons and cannon from Spain. The English Government caught wind of the intended uprising and sent three heavily armed frigates The Flamborough, The Worcester, and The Enterprise to quell matters. The bombardment of the castle lasted three days, though met with limited success due to the enormity of the castle walls, which in some places are up to 14 feet thick. Finally, Captain Herdman of The Enterprise sent his men ashore and over-whelmed the Spanish defenders. Following the surrender, the government troops discovered the magazine of 343 barrels of gunpowder which was then used to blow up what had remained from the bombardment…

For the best part of 200 years, the stark ruins of Eilean Donan lay neglected, abandoned and open to the elements, until Lt Colonel John Macrae-Gilstrap bought the island in 1911. Alongside help, he dedicated the next 20 years of his life to the reconstruction of Eilean Donan, restoring it to its former glory.

The castle was rebuilt according to the surviving ground plan of earlier phases and was formally completed in the July of 1932.

A magnificent castle that's well worth a visit!
