🔧 KIA TANDEM PUMP / BRAKE SERVO FAULT – PROPER DIAGNOSIS MATTERS! 🔧

Here’s another interesting diagnostic job, this time involving a Kia with an issue relating to the tandem/vacuum pump system and brake servo operation.

Our technician works through the system, showing the components involved under the bonnet, including the vacuum pipework, pump area and the vacuum supply to the brake servo.

⚠️ WHY IS VACUUM SO IMPORTANT?

The brake servo uses vacuum assistance to reduce the amount of force the driver needs to apply to the brake pedal. If the vacuum supply is insufficient, or there’s a problem with the pump, pipework or associated components, it can result in:

❌ A hard brake pedal
❌ Reduced brake assistance
❌ Increased effort required when braking
❌ Inconsistent servo assistance
❌ Associated warning lights or faults

🔧 OLD VS NEW – WHY SPARK PLUGS MATTER! 🔧

Here’s a great before-and-after comparison from a recent job at Edward Street Garage.

On the right are the old spark plugs removed from the vehicle, showing clear signs of use and wear. On the left are the brand-new replacement plugs ready to be fitted.

⚡ WHY ARE SPARK PLUGS IMPORTANT?

Spark plugs are responsible for igniting the air/fuel mixture inside a petrol engine. As they wear, the electrode gap and condition can deteriorate, which can affect how efficiently the engine runs.

Worn spark plugs can contribute to:

❌ Difficult starting
❌ Engine misfires
❌ Rough running or poor idle
❌ Reduced performance
❌ Increased fuel consumption
❌ Engine management lights
❌ Additional strain on ignition coils

🔧 WHAT’S THE FIX?

🔧 EDWARD STREET GARAGE – MARTIN SHOWS US A VOLVO OIL LEAK 🔧

Another behind-the-scenes look at a job being investigated at Edward Street Garage.

In this video, Martin takes us directly underneath the bonnet of this Volvo and talks us through an oil leak around the top of the engine/rocker cover area.

Rather than simply saying, “you've got an oil leak,” Martin gets the camera right into the affected area and physically shows where the oil is present and the components involved.

🛢️ Left unattended, engine oil leaks can potentially lead to:

❌ Falling engine oil levels
❌ Oil spreading across surrounding components
❌ Burning oil smells
❌ Smoke if oil contacts hot components
❌ A relatively small leak becoming a much bigger problem

🔧 Once the exact source is established, the appropriate seal, gasket or affected component can be repaired/replaced, before the area is cleaned and checked again.

We hope you're all having a relaxing Sunday and enjoying some well-earned downtime.

For today's little bit of workshop viewing, here's Martin, our Head Diagnostic Technician at Edward Street Garage, taking us inside the turbo on this Jeep.

And we mean literally inside it! 👀

Using an inspection camera, Martin is able to get a close-up view of the turbo compressor wheel and blades, allowing him to inspect their condition and explain exactly what he's seeing.

🔵🔧 DPF SPECIALISTS – A DPF FAULT DOESN’T AUTOMATICALLY MEAN “CLEAN IT”!

Here’s a great example of why proper DPF diagnostics matter.

During a detailed inspection of this vehicle's DPF system, our technicians identified something you certainly wouldn't fix with a DPF clean…

🔍 The DPF itself has developed a crack.

When a vehicle arrives with a DPF warning light or DPF-related fault code, simply cleaning the filter isn't automatically the answer.

A DPF problem can be caused or influenced by issues elsewhere on the vehicle — including pressure sensors and pipework, temperature sensors, EGR operation, fuelling, turbo/boost issues and failed regeneration conditions.

That's why our approach is:

🔵 DIAGNOSE THE SYSTEM
🔵 CHECK THE LIVE DATA
🔵 TEST THE COMPONENTS
🔵 INSPECT THE DPF ITSELF
🔵 FIND THE UNDERLYING CAUSE
🔵 THEN DECIDE ON THE CORRECT REPAIR

In this case, the physical inspection has uncovered damage to the DPF itself.

Cleaning can be appropriate when a DPF is contaminated or restricted and structurally suitable for cleaning — but it isn't the answer to every DPF fault. Proper diagnosis determines whether the vehicle needs a clean, regeneration, sensor or engine repair, or attention to the DPF itself.

🔧 TURBOCHARGER PROBLEMS – CATCH THEM BEFORE THEY BECOME ENGINE PROBLEMS! 🔧

This photo was taken during an inspection at Edward Street Garage and shows the inside of a vehicle’s turbocharger.

⚠️ WHAT’S GONE WRONG?

The turbo is showing signs of oil contamination/oil ingress within the turbo housing. This can be associated with problems such as worn turbo seals or bearings, oil supply/return issues, or excessive crankcase pressure.

A failing turbo can cause:

❌ Loss of power
❌ Excessive exhaust smoke
❌ Increased oil consumption
❌ Whistling or unusual turbo noises
❌ Engine management/boost faults
❌ Oil entering the intake system
❌ Potential engine or DPF damage if ignored

🔧 WHAT DOES IT NEED?

The turbocharger and associated oil/boost system need to be properly inspected and diagnosed. If turbo failure is confirmed, the turbo will require replacement along with the necessary associated parts and checks.

It’s also important to establish why the turbo has failed. Simply fitting another turbo without checking the oil feed, oil return, intake/boost system and other contributing factors can result in the replacement turbo failing again.

🔧 PROPER DIAGNOSTICS – NOT JUST REPLACING PARTS! 🔧

Here’s a look behind the scenes at Edward Street Garage diagnosing a Nissan with faults involving the Stop/Start system and windscreen washers.

Rather than guessing or simply replacing parts, our technician works through the vehicle properly — carrying out electrical testing, checking the battery and associated circuits, operating the vehicle controls and using diagnostic equipment and live data to understand exactly what is happening.

⚡ WHY DOES THIS MATTER?

Modern vehicles have multiple control modules, sensors and electrical systems all communicating with each other. A Stop/Start fault isn't necessarily as simple as fitting a new battery, and a washer fault doesn't automatically mean the motor or switch needs replacing.

🔧💻 DIAGNOSTICS IS MORE THAN JUST PLUGGING A COMPUTER IN!

Meet Martin, our Head Diagnostic Technician here at Edward Street Garage. 👋

In this video, Martin takes you through a real diagnostic investigation on this Vauxhall, looking into an issue relating to the cooling system and radiator fan.

Rather than simply reading a fault code and replacing a part, Martin gets underneath the vehicle and tests the cooling fan system directly, showing the electrical connection and explaining the checks he's carrying out.

🔍 This is what proper diagnostics looks like.

A diagnostic computer can give us valuable information and point us in the right direction, but it doesn't automatically tell us which part needs replacing.

That's where experience, technical knowledge and physical testing come in.
