The school run is taking a week off. Your car, however, has other plans!

Half term is nearly here, which means days out, muddy boots, snack wrappers everywhere and hearing

"Are we nearly there yet?"

Your tyres might look absolutely fine.

Until you look at the bit you can't normally see.

Most of us give our tyres a quick glance from the outside. Plenty of tread? Lovely. Job done.

But here's something worth knowing.

A tyre can be wearing heavily along its inner edge while the rest of it still looks perfectly healthy.

And that uneven wear might be telling you something.

It could be incorrect tyre pressure, wheel alignment or a problem with the steering or suspension.

With wet roads, fallen leaves and plenty of Devon's finest potholes to contend with, it's worth finding out before your tyres become an expensive surprise.

So here's your Monday reminder. Don't just check whether your tyres have tread. Check whether they're wearing evenly.

Do you clean your car before taking it to the garage?

Because there are two types of people.

The ones who give it a proper clean, empty the door pockets and make sure there's not a crumb in sight.

And the ones who hand over the keys and hope nobody notices the collection of receipts, old parking tickets and whatever's been living under the passenger seat since Easter.

We all know which one we are.

Devon lanes in October. Gorgeous to look at. Like driving on wet lettuce.

The hedges drop a fresh layer every time the wind gets up, then the rain turns it all to mush. Round a blind bend, on a downhill stretch, your tyres are doing all the hard work.

Which is fine, as long as they've got the tread for it.

Grab a 20p and pop it in the main grooves. If you can see the outer band of the coin, your tread's getting low. The legal limit is 1.6mm, but grip in the wet starts dropping off well before you get there.

Dark by teatime already. It properly sneaks up, doesn't it.

One week you're driving home in the light, the next you're squinting through the gloom wondering when that happened.

Trouble is, half of us are driving round half-lit and don't know it. A headlight that's gone dim, a brake light out, a bulb that blew weeks ago. You can't see it from the driver's seat, so you've no idea until someone points it out. Or doesn't.

Takes two minutes to check. Pop the lights on, walk round the car, get someone to stand on the brake while you look. Dipped beam, brakes, indicators, the lot.

Find one gone? Bring it in and we'll sort it while you wait. Not worth risking a dark Devon lane with a light out.

Nobody enjoys a Monday. Your car least of all.

Sat cold on the drive all weekend, then straight into the school run and the slog to work before it's even warmed up. Poor thing.

Mondays are our busiest day for call-outs for exactly that reason. Everything that was quietly brewing over the weekend picks the least convenient moment to actually go wrong.

If your car's been dropping hints lately, the lazy start, the odd noise, the light you've been pretending not to see, this is your reminder to get it looked at before it turns into a Monday you'll remember for the wrong reasons.

The clocks go back next month, and with them goes any hope of driving home in daylight.

It creeps up every year. One week you're doing the school run and the commute in the light, the next it's dark both ends of the day and nobody's quite ready for it.

Worth getting ahead of it while it's still mild, because the dark-nights jobs all land at once the moment the weather turns.

A couple of things that make the darker months a lot less grim.

Give your headlights a proper clean, lenses included. Grimy, foggy lenses throw out a fraction of the light they should, and you'd be amazed the difference a wipe makes. If they've gone cloudy and yellowed, that can be sorted too.

And check every bulb actually works while you're at it. A dipped beam out on a dark Devon lane is the difference between seeing the bend and not.

None of it takes long, and it's a far better job done now than discovered on the first properly dark, wet evening.

Failed its MOT and the repair bill's more than the car's worth? That's the moment a lot of people get stuck.

You don't want to throw good money at an old car. But you also don't want the hassle of getting rid, so it ends up sat on the drive for six months while you decide, taxed, insured, and going nowhere.

Here's the honest version from our side.

If the repair costs more than the car's worth, and it's the sort of car that'll only find you another bill three months later, fixing it rarely makes sense. You're renting time, not solving anything.

Scrapping it isn't giving up. It clears the drive, stops you paying to insure something you're not driving, and puts a bit back in your pocket toward whatever's next.

We can take it off your hands whether it's driveable or not. Proper paperwork, payment by bank transfer, and we'll point you to the bit you need to do with the DVLA so it's officially off your name.

No pressure either way. If you're genuinely not sure whether to fix it or scrap it, ring us and we'll give you a straight answer, even if that answer is keep it.

World Car Free Day this week. Which, from a garage, sounds a bit like turkeys voting for Christmas.

But hear us out, because it's not really about ditching the car. It's about the fact most of us could get a bit more out of the one we've got, and use a bit less fuel doing it.

None of it is dramatic, but it adds up.

Keep your tyres at the right pressure. Underinflated tyres drag, and drag costs fuel. It's the simplest saving there is and plenty of people are running soft without knowing.

Take the roof box or bars off when you're not using them. All they do the rest of the year is add weight and drag.

Go easy on the right foot. Smooth and gentle uses noticeably less than hard acceleration and late braking, and it's easier on the car too.

And keep it serviced. A car that's running properly, clean filters, healthy oil, is a car running efficiently.

Cheaper to run and kinder on the emissions. You don't have to give up the car to drive it a bit smarter.
