August in Devon. The busiest month of the lot round here.

Roads full of visitors who don't know the lanes. Car parks rammed by mid-morning. Caravans on every A-road, and a fair few big weekends still to come, Beautiful Days over at Escot later this month among them.

It's a brilliant time of year. It's also the month we're busiest, and there's a reason for that.

August is when cars get worked hardest. Long hot runs to the coast, fully loaded, often after sitting doing nothing but short trips all year. That combination finds every weak spot. The battery that was on its way out. The tyre that looked alright. The cooling system that couldn't quite cope in traffic.

None of it means you need to worry. It just means a five minute once-over before a big day out is worth its weight this month. Coolant, tyres, and a listen for anything that's changed. Spot it on the drive rather than on the hard shoulder.

And if August does catch you out, that's what we're here for. Every day, all month, whatever the hour.

Bit of a thank you this morning.

Running a local garage and recovery business means we spend a lot of our time meeting people on what's usually a bad day for them. Broken down, stranded, stressed, or staring at a car that's just failed its MOT.

And almost without fail, people are decent about it. Patient when we're flat out and it's taking a bit longer to reach them. Understanding when the news isn't what they were hoping for. Grateful when we get them sorted.

That's the bit that doesn't make it into the job description. This corner of Devon looks after its own, and we see it every week.

So thank you. To everyone who's called us, recommended us to a neighbour, left a kind word, or just been sound to deal with when things weren't going their way.

We're proud to be your local lot, and we don't take it for granted.

Friday afternoon, sun out, and half of Devon heading somewhere.

Somewhere on the A30 right now there's someone stood next to a car that's stopped doing what it's supposed to. Kids in the back, boot full, plans going sideways.

That's usually where we come in.

It's not glamorous work. It's often hot, sometimes wet, and nearly always at an inconvenient moment for whoever's stood there waiting. But getting someone off the side of a road and back on their way is a decent way to spend a Friday.

Thinking of buying a used car? Here's what to look at before you hand any money over.

We see the aftermath of rushed purchases fairly regularly. Someone buys a car on a sunny afternoon, drives it round the block, likes the colour, pays up. Then it's in with us a fortnight later with something that was always going to go wrong.

A few things worth doing.

Check the MOT history first, before you even go and look at it. It's free on the gov.uk site and all you need is the registration. It'll show you every pass, every fail, and every advisory going back years. Advisories are the useful bit. If the same thing has been flagged three years running and never fixed, that tells you how the car's been looked after.

Look at the mileage across those MOTs too. It should climb steadily. If it jumps about or barely moves for a couple of years then suddenly leaps, ask why.

See it in daylight and see it dry. Rain hides an awful lot of paintwork. So does a dark driveway at seven in the evening.

Start it from cold. If the seller has warmed it up before you arrive, that's worth noticing. A cold start tells you about smoke, rattles and how healthy the battery is. A warm engine hides all three.

Take it on a proper drive, not just round the corner. Get it up to a decent speed. Brake firmly somewhere safe. Listen for anything on full lock. Five minutes at 20mph tells you nothing.

Check the service history actually matches what's claimed. "Full service history" is a phrase, not a fact. Look at the stamps and the dates.

And if you're not confident, get someone who is to look at it with you. A second opinion costs a lot less than a bad car.

Here's the question that holds up more recoveries than anything else. Where are you?

Sounds daft. But when you're stood on the side of a road you don't know, in the middle of Devon, with hedges either side and no idea which turning you took twenty minutes ago, it's a genuinely hard question to answer.

"Somewhere on the A30" is the classic. The A30 runs the best part of 280 miles. It's a start, but it's not much of one.

The good news is your phone already has the answer, and it takes about ten seconds to find.

What3Words is the easy one. Free app, gives you three words for a three metre square anywhere in the country. You read the words out, we know exactly where you are. No guessing, no driving up and down looking for you.

If you'd rather not install anything, Google Maps does the job too. Press and hold on the blue dot showing your location and it'll give you the coordinates. Read those out and that works just as well.

And the low-tech version still counts. Marker posts on dual carriageways, the last junction number you passed, a pub name, a farm gate, anything. If you can see something with a name on it, tell us.

Worth doing now rather than later. Sat in the sunshine on a Friday is a better time to install an app than stood on a verge on the A30 with a wheel bearing gone.

Every now and then a review comes in that sums up exactly what we try to do. This one made our week.

A customer had a wheel bearing fail on the A30 near Sourton on a hot Saturday afternoon. If you know that stretch, you'll know it's not where anyone wants to be stuck. He managed to nurse it into Sourton Services before the wheel let go completely.

Here's what he had to say:

"After a few phone calls I spoke to Highfield garage who had a recovery vehicle with me very quickly. Brad removed the hub and took it back to the garage, fitted new bearings and Nathan returned it and refitted everything. From discovering the failure to being back on the road was just over 3 hours."

"Their service and pricing was way above and beyond anything I could have hoped for. I can't praise them highly enough."

Saturday afternoon. Middle of a heatwave. Broken down miles from home. Back on the road in three hours.

That's the whole job in a nutshell. Get to you fast, sort the problem properly, get you moving again.

Massive well done to Brad and Nathan on this one.

That's the schools breaking up round Devon over the next week or so. Which means the roads are about to change character completely.

The quiet morning run turns into packed lanes heading for the coast. Exmouth seafront busy by mid-morning. Caravans on every A-road. And that one family in a loaded-up estate car crawling along looking for somewhere to pull over and check the map.

We love it, really. It's what summer down here is all about.

It does mean a few more of us doing journeys we don't normally do though. Long hot runs to the beach in a car that mostly does the school run and the supermarket. That's usually when something that's been quietly struggling finally gives up.

If you're planning a proper day out over the holidays, it's worth five minutes before you go. A quick look at your coolant, a check of the tyres, and a listen for anything that doesn't sound right. Nothing dramatic, just enough to spot a problem on the drive rather than on the hard shoulder.

And if it does catch you out, you know where we are.

Funny how the summer sun causes more driving problems than the winter one, but it does. Low, bright sun in the morning and again in the evening catches people out constantly this time of year.

The moment it really bites is when you turn a corner or come over a hill straight into it and the whole road disappears in white light. It only lasts a second or two, but at 50mph that's a long way travelled with barely any idea what's in front of you.

A few things make a genuine difference.

Keep your windscreen clean on the inside, not just the outside. That greasy film that builds up on the glass is invisible until the sun hits it, and then it scatters the light and turns the whole screen into a haze. A proper wipe down with a clean cloth sorts it.

Top up your screenwash and make sure your wipers are actually clearing the glass rather than smearing it. Smearing plus low sun is a bad combination. If they're leaving streaks, they're due for replacing.

Keep a pair of sunglasses in the car so you're not caught out, and use your sun visor properly. If the visor's blocking your forward view, you can usually unclip it and swing it round to the side window instead.

And the simple one. If you genuinely can't see, slow down. Better to lose a few seconds than guess what's ahead.

Peak pollen season, and if you're a hay fever sufferer you'll already know about it. Here's something that gets overlooked though. Hay fever doesn't just make you miserable, it affects your driving.

A proper sneezing fit at 60mph means your eyes shut and your attention's gone for a second or two. At that speed you've travelled a fair distance completely blind. Streaming, itchy eyes don't help either when you're trying to read the road.

Then there's the tablets. A lot of hay fever medicines cause drowsiness, and some people don't realise the one they've grabbed is the sedating kind. It's worth a proper look at the packet before you set off. If it says it can make you drowsy, don't drive on it. Being impaired by medication behind the wheel is treated much like anything else that affects your ability to drive safely.

A few things that genuinely help in the car:

Keep the windows up and switch your air con to recirculate. That stops pollen being pulled in from outside rather than blowing it straight at your face.

Give the inside of the car a wipe down now and then. Pollen settles on the dash and seats and builds up.

And if your vents are blowing dusty, stale air, your pollen filter is probably clogged. That's the cabin filter, and a fresh one makes a real difference to the air you're breathing while driving. It's a quick job and something we can sort while you wait.
