Falling over in wet rainy weather is a risk I forget to talk about at times on driving lessons. It can be so easy to concentrate on how rain can affect the car and people driving them, I forget to talk about the people walking out in the thick of it!

This is a reminder of how quickly things can happen in wet weather. Slow down, leave extra stopping distance and most importantly look out for people near the road.

This all happened so quickly, and it was incredible how many people came to help in the end. Everyone helped in different ways, this was teamwork making the dreamwork at it's finest. It was incredible to see! Then after 15 minutes or so, when 999 said it would take upto 2 hours for an ambulance to come, miraculously an off duty ambulance came round the corner off the roundabout near sainsburys in Horsham and came to our rescue. Within 10 minutes they had her up on her feet, in the ambulance and then we all went our separate ways. Within 30 minutes we were back in the car and carrying on with our driving lesson. WOW!! Oh and her husband was so lovely and saw the funny side of it all, talking more about the positives and how they're used to falling over. What an amazing man!

We have no idea how she got on in the ambulance, but from what we could see it was a few bumps and bruises and maybe an injury to her shoulder. If anyone knows her, I would be so grateful if you could contact me so I know how she is. Obviously for confidentiality please message me privately.

What if I hit my driving examiner on my driving test?

That was the question my student with Tourette’s asked me.

And honestly… it’s a really important question.

Because when you have Tourette’s, you don't always have control over your tics. The thought of having a tic during your driving test, especially one involving movement or contact, can be incredibly worrying.

So what happens?

The important thing is communication and preparation.

If a student has Tourette’s or another condition that may affect their driving test, we can make sure DVSA is aware and that the examiner understands the situation before the test begins.

DVSA guidance says that where a disability or special need is declared, examiners should, wherever possible, adapt their approach to accommodate the candidate, provided the test itself isn't undermined.

That doesn't mean the normal driving standard disappears.

It means the examiner can understand the difference between something a candidate deliberately does and something caused by their condition.

And that's exactly why I have these conversations with my students before test day.

Because sometimes the biggest obstacle isn't the driving… It's the fear of what might happen.

If you're neurodiverse and you're worried that your condition means you can't learn to drive or take your test, please don't automatically assume that's the case.

The right support, understanding and preparation can make a huge difference. Driving lessons aren't about making everyone learn in the same way.

They're about finding a way that works for you.

This is real life in a driving lesson with Tourette’s.

Sometimes the tics are small. Sometimes they’re more noticeable. And sometimes… I get a smack in the leg! 😂

But the important thing is this:
Having Tourette’s doesn’t mean you can’t learn to drive.
It means we may need to understand your individual tics, work with them, make adaptations where necessary and, most importantly, create an environment where you don't feel judged.

My job isn't to expect every person to learn in exactly the same way.

My job is to understand the person sitting next to me and help them become a safe, confident driver.

This is why I love teaching neurodiverse learners. Not because every lesson is easy.
Because every learner is different, and finding what works for them can make such a difference.

If you have Tourette’s, ADHD, autism, dyslexia, dyspraxia, anxiety or another neurodiversity and you're worried that driving might not be for you, don't assume you can't.

Let's talk about it.

5 years today since I became a driving instructor...

Seriously though, thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who has helped me, supported me and been there for me along the way. It's been the best rollercoaster, and I can’t wait for the next 5!!
