We recently had a 5.0L Range Rover in after the customer reported a high-pitched whining noise from the engine.
🔍 Diagnostic process:
To isolate the fault, the drive belt was removed and the engine run without the supercharger turning. With the noise gone, further inspection confirmed the issue — the supercharger bearing had collapsed, causing the whining noise.
🔧 Repair carried out:
✅ Supercharger unit removed
✅ Replacement supercharger fitted
✅ System reassembled, tested, and running quietly as it should
📘 Supercharger facts:
Superchargers are belt-driven units designed to force more air into the engine, increasing power and throttle response. Because they spin at extremely high speeds, they rely heavily on internal bearings and lubrication. When bearings begin to fail, whining or siren-like noises are often the first warning — ignoring this can lead to complete unit failure and further engine damage.
⚠️ Early diagnosis is key to preventing bigger, more expensive problems.
