Last month, it was reported that trials for a fleet of full-size driverless buses were to begin in Scotland this summer, per BBC News. 🚌

This two-week trial will see completely autonomous single-decker buses drive a 14-mile route from Edinburgh to Fife — the buses are fitted with sensor and control technology which means they can operate on pre-selected roads without the safety driver having to take control of the vehicle.

Although this technology is creating advances towards fully autonomous vehicles, there are also ethical concerns to consider.

As reported by scientific journal Nature, level five autonomous vehicles operate on a ‘culturally contingent’ moral code, not a universal one — meaning that an autonomous vehicles programming could vary depending on the country that it’s manufactured for.

According to Work-Fit, in a study of over 1,000 bus drivers, 39 per cent of them experienced severe back pain or injury due to poor ergonomic design in bus manufacturing.

Drivers of coaches, buses and heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) can be in their working environment for up to eight hours at any one time.

The steering wheel, pedals and seat all have an influence on the driver’s posture and, poor ergonomic design with insufficient back support and incorrect steering wheel positioning can all contribute to serious health issues for drivers.

Our head of sales Brereton investigates the importance of improved ergonomic design in bus manufacturing.

The e-commerce industry is continuing to grow year-on-year — in 2021, it was reported that consumers spent a record-breaking £4.8 billion on ‘Cyber Monday’ sales.

This level of growth means that e-commerce is encouraging vehicle manufacturers and logistics companies to focus on solutions to make deliveries more efficient and environmentally sustainable.

The ‘last mile’ of a delivery is the movement of goods from a transportation hub to their final destination and it has been said that this the most difficult stage of the delivery process — this is one of the reasons why smaller vans are now the next on the electrification front and now, technology exists that will see this as a commercially viable option for the first time.

In an article for the Institute of Engineering and Technology , our Head of Sales Roger Brereton explains why electrifying the last mile of an online delivery is crucial.

Amid driver shortages, the demand for fully driverless trucking vehicles is increasing and is one of the core factors behind why we’re seeing original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and tech start-ups establishing partnerships.

A recent report tracking intellectual property movements has proven that the race for autonomous trucking is making significant progress — according to a report by Forecast, the quantity of patents issued and applied has risen significantly over the past few years.

The race to deliver the next generation of vehicle technology is gathering momentum. Read the full article here to find out more about what these partnerships could mean for the trucking industry: https://bit.ly/3KfBm8B

Have you seen our latest article for E-motec?

Roger Brereton investigates the pros and cons of the microfactory. The competition to electrify vehicles is not simply between manufacturers. The rivalry is now between diametrically opposed manufacturing methods.

The term ‘microfactory’ was first coined back in 1990 by the Mechanical Engineering Laboratory of Japan. The term ‘microfactory’ captures the idea of a smaller manufacturing footprint to deliver more innovative and customisable designs.

The cell-based manufacturing of the microfactory is geared toward flexibility and innovation.

Transportation is changing in !

It is set to become the first city in the UK to adopt an all-electric bus system, after the local council ordered 130 zero-emission double-decker buses.

These new buses will be introduced as early as 2023 as part of the £140 million project.

As a business based in the city, we’re really excited to see that these developments are happening in our own backyard!
