😰 NERVOUS ABOUT YOUR FIRST DRIVING LESSON?

You're certainly not the only one.

Some learners arrive excited.

Some arrive terrified.

Some arrive somewhere in between!

There's nothing wrong with being nervous.

A good lesson should give you time to understand what you're doing, practise it and gradually build confidence.

You don't have to know everything before your first lesson.

That's what the lessons are for.

🚗 REVERSE BAY PARKING

One of the things we teach learners is that reference points are there to help you learn — not to become permanently dependent on them.

At first, a reference point can help you understand:

➡️ When to steer

➡️ Where to look

➡️ When to straighten

➡️ Where the car should finish

With practice, the manoeuvre should become more natural.

The ultimate aim is to understand where the car is and judge it for yourself.

👀 GOOD DRIVERS DON'T JUST LOOK — THEY READ THE ROAD

Imagine you see a car waiting at a side road.

You can't know for certain whether the driver is going to emerge.

But you can look for clues.

Are the wheels moving?

Is the vehicle creeping forward?

Can you see the driver?

Is their view restricted?

Are you approaching quickly?

The earlier you identify the possibility of something happening, the more options you have.

🚗 LEARNING MANUAL IN NORTHAMPTON?

Crusade Driving School also offers manual driving lessons in Northampton with Claire Pettit.

Manual lessons are currently £40 per hour.

🟨 YELLOW BOX JUNCTIONS — DO YOU KNOW THE RULE?

You shouldn't enter a yellow box unless your exit is clear.

There is an important exception when you're turning right and your exit is blocked by oncoming traffic or other vehicles waiting to turn right.

The important thing is to think beyond the vehicle immediately in front of you.

Where are you going to go if you enter the box?

Don't enter simply because the traffic light is green.

🤔 QUICK DRIVING QUESTION

You're approaching a roundabout and suddenly realise you're in the wrong lane.
What should you do?

A) Change lane immediately

B) Stop on the roundabout

C) Follow your lane safely and correct your route later

Getting into the wrong lane isn't automatically dangerous.

Making a sudden or unsafe lane change to correct the mistake can be.

⚡ WHY DO SOME LEARNERS PREFER AUTOMATIC?

There are several reasons learners choose automatic:

• No clutch control

• No gear changes

• Less to coordinate

• More attention available for observation and planning

• Particularly attractive to some nervous learners

Of course, automatic isn't automatically "easier" in every situation — you still need good observation, judgement, steering and speed control.

But for many learners it can be a great way to learn.

🛑 WHAT IF YOU TAKE THE WRONG TURNING ON YOUR DRIVING TEST?

Don't panic.

And definitely don't make a dangerous last-second manoeuvre just because you've gone the wrong way.

If you can continue safely, continue safely.

Your examiner isn't testing whether you can follow a perfect route.

They're looking at how safely and competently you drive.

A safe wrong turn is much better than an unsafe attempt to correct it.
