This is Adam’s 1985 Porsche 944.2 running a custom built Gaz GHA coilover kit. The car is used for fast road and track day driving and sports the stock 2.5L engine with its 163 horsepower, manual transmission and that legendary Porsche balance. The kit was built to lower the car and improve the mechanical grip of the tyres for better roll control and handling.

This is Adam’s Citroen Saxo autograss car running custom built Gaz rear dampers. The dampers are adjustable for stiffness and the dampers where built 30mm longer than the road car version to match the indexing on the torsion bar to raise the rear. This helps the car rotate during cornering reducing understeer.

COILOVER TYPES

GAZ GHA – This shock is aimed at the fast road and occasional track day driver. Rebound adjustments are made using a single adjuster per damper to soften or stiffen your suspension depending upon your needs. As with all Gaz coilover types, these kits are height height adjustable so you can get the perfect stance for your car.

GAZ GOLD - This shock is aimed at the track enthusiast, with a widened shock body they can hold bigger, stronger billet internals and more oil capacity to reduce heat fade. With the addition of bump and rebound adjustment (single adjuster per damper adjust both at the same time) these are designed to spend their time comfortably taking more abuse that a track setting gives, and gives the driver more power to dial in the suspension characteristics.

GAZ MONOTUBE - This is the highest level of coilover we supply, designed for competition use. Using high tensile aeroplane grade aluminium, this damper is designed to withstand the highest level of stress which comes from racing conditions. With gas charged internals and a floating piston, it gives the highest level of reaction time, with the addition of separate bump and rebound control ((single adjuster per damper adjust both at the same time) to give ultimate personalisation of handling characteristics. Where the milliseconds count; this is the shock for you.

GAZ TWIN ADJUSTABLE DAMPERS – Available for road and race cars, the adjusters are integral in the damper or in the case of the Gold Twin adjustable, supplied with external cannisters. These dampers allow separate adjustments to the dampers bump and rebound to allow fine tuning of your cars handling characteristics.

CAR SPECIFICATION – Effect on set up and spring rates.

What spring rate is best for my car is a question we get asked daily! The short answer is there is no definitive answer as it will depend upon the car specification and use. Every coilover customer will receive an email from us asking for the specification and use of their car and the tyres they are using. Here is why:

Road Surface - The most important thing for a vehicle is to have the tyres in contact with the road surface as much as possible. So the first thing you need to consider is; how smooth is the surface you’re driving on, and how bumpy is it? The smoother the surface the higher the spring rate can be and in race cars on semi and full slick tyres, the higher spring rates will help generate more heat in the tyres, getting them into their operating temperature window and improving grip.

Use of the car - Drifting vs racing example. The main aim of drifting is to drive as fast as possible whilst maintaining sideways angle of the car, so in most scenarios overall acceleration and power is more important than stopping and turning. Whereas in a race car, braking capability and front end steering is just as important as forward momentum. So drift cars usually run a lot softer springs on the rear, allowing more squat = more grip. If a race car used the same rear spring, there would be less weight over the front of the vehicle, creating less grip on the front, impacting steering and braking.

Powertrain - Let’s use RWD vs FWD for this example. You’ll notice that the springs on the back of a FWD race car are usually much stiffer than the springs on the back of a RWD race car. Now this is mainly due to weight transfer of the vehicle, you want to keep weight over the driven wheels of the car to maintain grip during acceleration.

Tyre Compound - A road tyre will have a much softer side wall than a semi or full slick tyre, so you need to be cautious of running higher spring rates, as the tyre will be taking much more force from the downforce, this will lead to more heat being pushed into the tyre and may cause the tyre to ‘roll over’. A semi or full slick however has a hard sidewall and requires a lot more heat to become stickier, therefore a stiffer spring rate will push the tyre into the ground, creating more friction and more heat, utilising the tyres capabilities.

FIXED AND ADJUSTABLE TOP MOUNTS

We understand the importance of not only your suspension hardware, but the geometry and alignment of the vehicle is JUST as important so we supply fixed camber, camber adjustable and camber/castor adjustable top mounts for a wide variety of vehicles as shown. If you want to add top mounts to your order, each applicable listing on our website will give you the option of adding adjustable (or indeed, fixed) top mounts.

Fixed camber top mounts are spherical bearing top mounts that remove the flex seen in OE top rubber mounts and maintain suspension geometry during hard cornering. Adjustable top mounts are the same in principle but the adjustable aspect allows geometry to be set exactly where you need it to be.

Camber has a huge impact on your grip due to how much tyre is contacting the surface at different ride heights, body roll, steering angle and much more.

Castor has a huge impact on steering feel, turn in, self-centering, high speed stability, camber gain and much more.

Castor and camber do work in turn with each other, so being able to adjust these independently will give you ultimate control over many extremely important vehicle characteristics.
