With the arches now taking shape in Part 3, we turned our attention to one of the less visible—but absolutely critical—components: the buck strengthener. The original piece had deteriorated over time, so instead of attempting repairs, we fabricated a brand-new strengthener from scratch.
This stage is all about structure and longevity.
A properly made strengthener ensures the buck remains solid and capable of handling real-world use without flex or fatigue. Using precise measurements and quality steel, we formed a new piece that fits perfectly and restores the buck’s original strength.

Once welded in, everything stiffened up exactly as it should. It’s work like this—often hidden once the build is complete—that separates a good restoration from a great one.

Toyota Hi Lux – Part 2

After tackling the tailgate in Part 1, we moved on to one of the biggest challenges: the buck itself. The side panel was in terrible shape, so we made the decision to cut out the damaged section entirely.

Luckily, we managed to source a replacement piece that matched perfectly—a rare find for a project like this! With careful alignment and precision welding, we integrated the new section seamlessly into the existing structure. This step was crucial to restoring the strength and integrity of the buck.

Next up, we’ll be focusing on getting everything around it to fit nicely in particular the fuel filler housing. Every detail matters when bringing a classic back to life!
