DID YOU KNOW YOUR BMW CAN BRAKE ITSELF?

And no… we're not talking about autonomous driving!

When you're driving in heavy rain, some BMWs can actually apply the brakes automatically — without you touching the brake pedal.

So what's going on?

When the car detects that the windscreen wipers are being used, it knows the roads are likely to be wet.

The system can then briefly apply the brake pads against the discs to remove the thin film of water that can build up on the braking surface.

You probably won't even notice it happening.

No warning light.
No noise.
No dramatic braking.

Just a tiny bit of clever German engineering happening in the background. 🇩🇪

And there's a good reason for it…

When you suddenly need the brakes in heavy rain, the system wants the discs and pads to be ready to deliver full braking performance immediately, rather than having to clear that layer of water first.

Your BMW has been doing things you didn't even know it could do. 👀

Electric cars aren't a new invention.

In fact, more than 100 years ago, electric cars were already a serious rival to petrol cars.

By around 1900, electric vehicles accounted for roughly a third of the vehicles on American roads. 🚗⚡

And here's the really interesting bit…

People liked them for many of the same reasons some people like EVs today.

They were:

⚡ Quiet
⚡ Easy to drive
⚡ Clean at the point of use
⚡ Ideal for short journeys around town

There were even more than 60 electric taxis operating in New York City around the turn of the century.

So why did electric cars disappear?

Petrol cars began to offer something early EVs struggled with — longer range and easier refuelling.

Then Henry Ford's Model T arrived, mass production brought petrol cars down in price, and the electric starter motor removed one of the biggest annoyances of early petrol cars: having to hand-crank the engine.

Electric cars didn't disappear because the idea was new.

They disappeared because, at the time, petrol technology solved more of the problems people had.

Fast forward more than a century…

And we're having the conversation all over again. ⚡
