The British Superbike title gets settled at Brands Hatch this weekend, with the first race this afternoon and two more tomorrow. Kyle Ryde went into the finale 53 points clear of Scott Redding with 105 still on offer, so nobody’s engraving anything yet.

Which feels like a fair excuse to talk about Barry Sheene, the first proper superstar of British bike racing, 500cc world champion in 1976 and 1977 and owner of the best-known number 7 in the sport. After he died in 2003, Valentino Rossi tested in a one-off helmet carrying Sheene’s 7, and that October he carried a number 7 flag round Phillip Island after winning the Australian Grand Prix.

Alan Stammers drew Rossi in that helmet. Lot 17 is his signed print, numbered 7 of 500, which is Sheene’s number and not by accident. Bidding is open, the estimate is £250 and it closes on Thursday 22 October at 20:00. It’s in the link in bio, where Save to watchlist or Add to calendar will stop the close sneaking up on you between races.

Bidding now open on the first five lots. Swipe through: Jim Clark’s Lotus 33, Rossi’s tribute to Sheene (number 7 of 500, on purpose), Villeneuve’s 126 C2 in 1/18, Button’s Brawn, and, on the last slide, the right-hand exhaust bank off Schumacher’s 1995 Benetton.

The prints and the Ferrari are estimated at £150 to £250; the exhaust at £4,000–£7,000. Each lot closes on its own time next Thursday, starting with the Button at 18:30 and finishing with the exhaust at 20:30. The listings carry the background, the condition notes and how collection works.

Register via the link in bio. On each lot page, Save to watchlist or Add to calendar to keep track of the close.

Swipe for the evidence. This is the right-hand exhaust bank off a Benetton B195, the Renault V10 car Michael Schumacher took to his second title in 1995. Mike O’Connor of RESS hand-polished the Inconel, plated the inside in 24 carat gold, coated the top in white ceramic and fixed the lot to a slab of black granite.

The interesting part is on slides two and three. The pipe is engraved No 20, 95.45.121-1, and the last digit is 1. The Benetton chassis list that came over with the team’s assets records chassis 1 as Schumacher’s. Paperwork from thirty years ago is thinner than anyone would like, so the listing stops short of naming a Grand Prix. B195, chassis 1, Schumacher’s car is as far as the metal and the paper go, and it’s as far as we go.

Lot 3 opens for bidding on Thursday 15 October at noon and closes on Thursday 22 October at 20:30. Estimate £4,000–£7,000. On the lot page (link in bio), Save to watchlist gets you alerts, and Add to calendar puts the close in your diary. If you’d like to bid, register through the bio link before Thursday.

How buying works on Opening Stint. The first five lots open on Thursday 15 October at noon.

1. Register. It’s free, via the link in bio.
2. Verify your identity and add a card. Stripe handles both, and it’s much better done over a Monday lunch than at 19:29 on a closing evening.
3. Follow the lot. On each lot page, Save to watchlist sends you email alerts once your email is verified, and Add to calendar puts a reminder in your diary for 15 minutes before the lot closes. The calendar one doesn’t need an account.
4. Bid. Put in a bid, or a maximum and let it bid for you up to that figure. Before you confirm, you see the buyer’s premium, the VAT on it and the total. A bid in the final minute adds two minutes to the clock, so nobody wins by sniping.
5. Pay and collect. Winning bids are paid within seven days, by card or bank transfer. Each listing says where the lot is and how it gets to you, and you have seven days from receipt to send it back if it doesn’t match its listing.

The first five are three signed Alan Stammers prints, a 1/18 Villeneuve Ferrari and Schumacher’s 1995 Benetton exhaust. The lot pages and registration are both in the link in bio, and the rest is on the Questions page, openingstint.com/faq.

Swipe through. This is the GP Replicas 1/18 Ferrari 126 C2, Gilles Villeneuve’s number 27 from 1982, one of an edition of 750. It sits on a stitched leather base under an acrylic cover and comes with its presentation box.

1982 should have been Villeneuve’s year in this car, and it went the other way. Number 27 has belonged to him in the minds of Ferrari fans ever since. The model does the detail properly, from the exposed V6 and turbo plumbing to the blue harness, which is why the range has a following among F1 collectors.

One back corner of the cover has a small crack. It’s on the last slide, and it’s in the cover, not the car.

It’s one of the first four lots on Opening Stint. Bidding opens on Thursday 15 October at noon and closes on Thursday 22 October from 19:00, with an estimate of £225. If you’d like to bid, register via the link in bio now rather than on Thursday morning.

Swipe for the whole thing. This woven pit board came down at the end of Le Mans, taken by a man hanging off the pit balcony with a camera strap in one hand while fending off about fifty other collectors with the other.

He then pulled it off its frame so it would fit in a GT6 for the drive home, which is the most British part of the story. The staple holes and pit lane grime are still on it (last slide). The seller links it to the Kremer car, the lettering says RSR, and the listing sets out both so you can make your own mind up.

This is the right-hand exhaust bank off a Benetton B195 V10 from 1995, the year Schumacher won his second title. Mike O’Connor polished the Inconel, plated the inside in gold and sat it on black granite, so it now spends its retirement looking like a brass instrument that’s been to a lot of Grands Prix.

The pipes still carry their original numbering, and the team paperwork points to chassis 1, which was Michael’s. It’s one of the preview lots on Opening Stint while we’re in pre-sale. Have a proper look via the link in bio, and register there if you want the heads-up when bidding opens.

Guy Martin’s AGV Pista from the Mugen TT Zero run at the Isle of Man, 2017, his last ever TT. White shell, Mugen graphics, the sort of helmet that still looks like it’s been somewhere and a hell of a story to back it up.
