🚗⚠️ £6,000 REPAIR BILL… OR JUST £600? GET A SECOND OPINION! ⚠️🚗

We recently had a 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan 2.0 TDI (1968cc diesel) brought to us with reported running issues.

The owner had already visited their local main dealer and was advised that the vehicle required over £6,000 worth of repairs due to a suspected high-pressure fuel pump failure.

Thankfully, after being recommended by one of our existing customers (thank you for your continued support!), the owner decided to seek a second opinion and brought the vehicle directly to us from the main dealer.

After carrying out our diagnostic process, we advised that further investigation was required. With customer authorisation, we stripped down the cambelt system to verify the engine timing.

What we found was surprising…

❌ Chunks of the timing belt were missing.

❌ Further inspection revealed that the cambelt tensioner had completely seized.

❌ This had caused the engine timing to move out of specification and had damaged the timing belt.

At this stage, we recommended replacing the complete cambelt kit, including the damaged belt and failed tensioner. Simply re-timing the old belt was not an option due to the risk of catastrophic engine damage.

The good news?

✅ New cambelt kit fitted.

✅ Engine timing correctly set.

✅ Vehicle running smoothly.

✅ No warning lights.

✅ No abnormal noises.

✅ Fully road tested and confirmed reliable.

The customer was understandably delighted. What had initially been diagnosed elsewhere as a repair costing over £6,000 was correctly diagnosed and repaired by our team for just £600 — saving them thousands of pounds and getting them back on the road much sooner.

Another successful diagnostic job completed here at Bakers MOT 🔧❄️

A customer brought in their 2017 Audi A5 after another local garage had been unable to locate an air conditioning leak. As a business that continually invests in the latest technology and equipment, we were able to diagnose and rectify the fault using advanced leak detection methods.

Using our latest equipment, we carried out a Leaktrace test using a specialist gas mixture (5% hydrogen / 95% nitrogen) and filled the A/C system. By monitoring the digital gauges, we quickly identified the system was losing pressure — confirming a leak was present.

We traced the first fault to a failed air conditioning condenser, which is a very common issue on modern vehicles. After replacing the condenser, we completed another nitrogen pressure test to ensure the system was fully sealed.

However, during our recheck process, the system was STILL losing pressure.

Using another one of our latest investments — the Mastercool Intella Sense III (combustible gas leak detector) — we identified a second, much smaller leak coming from two rubber O-rings on the air conditioning pressure pipes.

Without the latest technology and our thorough diagnostic procedures, this secondary leak could very easily have been missed.

This one really stings…

It is with a very heavy heart I announce the immediate closure of Covino, a business I’ve built from the ground up since 2016. We’d have celebrated our 10th anniversary this December, but it simply wasn’t to be.

For the avoidance of doubt, Covino’s ‘cause of death’ can be attributed to the last two Labour budgets. In trying to do the right thing they’ve gone after completely the wrong people, something I’ll never forget or forgive them for.

On a more positive note, I’ve made some exceptional relationships over the last decade with guests, staff and suppliers who I now consider great friends. Thank you to everyone who has supported us throughout this journey. Your custom really did go towards things like my children’s football boots, something big business can’t tell you, so keep supporting your local independents!

I’m going to spend some time licking my wounds, filing for bankruptcy, and most importantly, catching up on lost time with my family - who have come second to the restaurants far too often over the last 10 years.

I’ll see you all again soon once I’ve figured out what’s next. Best of luck to everyone who’s battling their way through these testing times.

Another job done right this week 👨‍🔧✅

A customer came to us with a TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System) warning light showing on the dashboard – something you should never ignore. These systems are designed to alert you when tyre pressures drop or when a sensor fails, helping to keep you safe, improve fuel efficiency, and prevent unnecessary tyre wear.

Using our latest Autel TPMS diagnostic equipment, we were able to test each sensor individually and quickly identify exactly which ones had failed – no guesswork, just accurate diagnostics.

We then:
🔧 Removed the faulty sensors
🔧 Replaced them with new ones (held in stock for a quick turnaround)
🔧 Programmed and coded them to the vehicle
🔧 Corrected and reset all tyre pressures

The result? A fully functioning system and a vehicle returned with no warning lights 👍

🚗 Not all heroes wear capes… some just have the right tools and know-how. 🔧

This week we had a customer come to us after a stressful experience elsewhere. His vehicle had failed its MOT due to worn rear brake pads. After holding onto the car for several days, the previous garage admitted they couldn’t complete the repair — their equipment simply couldn’t wind back the electronic rear calipers.

Understandably, the customer was worried this would mean a trip to the main dealer, long delays, and a hefty bill.

Thankfully, he was pointed in our direction.

We got him booked in for Friday — but with the vehicle already on-site, we brought it into the workshop two days early and had the job completed the very same day. ✅

Modern vehicles are becoming increasingly complex. Many now feature secure gateways that restrict access to key electronic systems, meaning not every garage — or DIY enthusiast — can carry out what used to be a routine job.

That’s exactly why we continue to invest in advanced diagnostic equipment and ongoing staff training. It allows us to confidently handle jobs like this without delay.

On this particular vehicle, the rear brake pads weren’t your typical design either — they featured a retaining spring connecting the inner and outer pads, helping maintain consistent contact with the disc.

We had something truly special through the doors recently at Bakers MOT 👀✨

This stunning 1989 F-reg Lotus Esprit Turbo came in for its MOT — and what a car it is. A true icon of British engineering, and a real head-turner even decades later.

Fun fact: The Lotus Esprit Turbo from this era could go from 0–60 mph in around 5 seconds 🚀 — seriously impressive performance for its time and still exciting today!

It’s always a pleasure to work on vehicles that have been so meticulously maintained, and this one was no exception. We’re happy to say it sailed through its MOT inspection with ease — a very happy customer all round!

We feel incredibly lucky to see such a wide variety of cars come through our doors here in Chester, from everyday runarounds to rare classics like this.
