The Telegraph asked five independent garages what they'd buy with Β£20,000 of their own money. Four said petrol or diesel. Matt was the only one who picked an EV.

His choice was a used long range Model Y, single rear motor. 250 to 280 miles of real range, comfortable, and the Supercharger network behind it. It's a car that handles the everyday stuff without any drama, which is what matters when you're spending your own money.

That's the same thing we tell customers who come to us weighing up their first used EV. Buy on how a car ages and how it drives every day, not on the badge.

Chris Menon's piece is in the Telegraph now if you're in the market.

When an EV motor starts whining, it's usually the bearing inside it.

Until now the only fix was a whole new motor.

Alistair Mason from Schaeffler came down to the workshop to hand over their new E-ARTS tool, the Electric Axle Repair Tool. It lets us split the motor, draw the stator off the rotor, change the bearings and build it all back up. There are no other contact points in there, so once the bearings are done the motor is sorted.

That's a repair instead of a replacement, and a much smaller bill for you.

Thanks to Alistair and everyone at Schaeffler for getting one to us. Take a look πŸ‘‡

Running a business can be a lonely job. You make the big calls, and most of the time nobody outside your own four walls ever tells you whether they were right.

Last week we hosted the GOLD Cohort 15 board meeting here at the workshop. Four owner managers round a table with their plans, their numbers and their problems out in the open, and everyone else free to pull them apart.

Round that table: Dave Cook from Bounce Activations, who build live brand experiences. Henry Herbert from Hobbs House Bakery, fifth generation, baking since the 1920s. Geoff Newsome from The ITSA Digital Trust, who refurbish donated computers and have put digital education in front of more than six million people. And QuoLux, who run the whole thing.

Claire and I have run this business together for years, and my grandfather started the garage in 1962. None of that means we've got all the answers. Sitting in a room with people who'll be straight with you is one of the better things we do for the business.

Thanks to everyone who came, and to QuoLux for putting it together.

Cleevely Motors, Cleevely EV and Cleevely EV Mobile explained πŸ‘‡πŸ”Š

27/07/2026

Five years out, the picture's clearer than it's been in a long time.

The mobile side is growing fast. More techs on the road, getting to customers further from Cheltenham, faster than we ever could before. Over in Motors we're still honing what we do best. And on the EV parts side, we're scaling so independent garages and DIY owners can get the bits they need without going round the houses.

I can't give too much away on a couple of the projects in flight. What I can say is none of it changes what we're actually about. Honest work, proper diagnostics, looking after the people who trust us with their cars.

The next ten years in the aftermarket are going to look nothing like the last ten.

The Jaecoo 7, a Chinese plug-in hybrid, is already one of the fastest selling cars in the UK. Cars like that are about to flood into independent workshops, and the techs who understand them are going to be the ones in demand.

You can treat that as a threat, or as the biggest opportunity the aftermarket has had in a generation. We know which way we're leaning.

Most garage owners don't step away from the bench long enough to think about strategy.

Diesel numbers are dropping. We're seeing it in our own bays, and I'd bet you're seeing the same. EVs in the UK car park keep climbing month on month, and that's a revenue stream sat there waiting for the independents brave enough to learn it.

You don't have to convert your whole workshop tomorrow. Dip your toe in. Train a tech. Take on a few jobs. Work out what's actually involved before someone else in your town does.

Hybrids get a rough deal in the EV conversation. They shouldn't.

Over in Cleevely Motors we're more than happy working on them. You've got a very sophisticated petrol engine that needs proper looking after, plus the electrification side, the battery and the onboard charging. We're comfortable with all of it under one roof.

A hybrid isn't a gateway drug to a full EV. For someone covering huge miles, or living rural without home charging, it's a sensible way to drop your petrol emissions without forcing a switch that doesn't suit your life yet.

Independent garages are running out of people to hand the keys to.

The generation above me, my father's age, are retiring out of their businesses with no one lined up to take over. No succession, no buyer, just a closed shutter and one less garage on the high street.

It's not only owner numbers shrinking. The tech pipeline is drying up at the same time. Fewer apprentices, fewer mechanics willing to specialise, and a real squeeze coming for the independents trying to keep the trade alive.

If you run an independent and you're working out what's next, start the conversation. It has to begin somewhere.
