Wow, Biarritz we timed you well! This was such a treat and great to mix up after being inland for quite some time.

Because the latter part of our trip was left open, we didn’t actually have anywhere booked (some might say this is foolish 😬). All the Aire sites were full when we arrived and there is very little off road space for Motorhomes. Campsites are like gold dust, especially in August☀️. However, someone was looking down on us, as the main site in Biarritz, Camping Biarritz, had a pitch available for the night! Marc puts this down to us getting on the road early and getting there at the right time🤓. I think it was bc I asked
nicely 💁🏻‍♀️

Tbh we spent hardly anytime at the site, but the facilities were fantastic and the pool a good size. It was about a 1.5k/ 2k walk into central Biarritz, which we did mostly along the different bays. Beautiful soft sand with plenty of space! It’s a big surfing spot, with many people learning to surf too. We had a fantastic lunch at a place on the beach called Le Surfing 🏄‍♀️ restaurant (make sure you book!), highly recommend the Espresso Martinis 🍸 ☺️ Biarritz has got a really nice vibe, little shops, art galleries and lots of wine bars and places to eat. We stayed out until late and ate dinner at a Japanese fusion restaurant which was 10/10! The kids were troopers all day, so we jumped in an uber back to the campsite which was about €13.

The last few days of our trip were all about celebrating our daughter’s birthday 🥳 and her one simple request was for flumes! Marc found a Eurocamp in Landes (an hour North of Biarritz) that did the job. We had a beautiful pitch in the forest, the kids were super happy with the waterpark and we finished the birthday watching the sunset with pizzas 🍕on the beach 🏖️. Job done!

On Saturday we had a 2.5hr journey to Bilbao, where we were catching the ferry home 🏡 😭. We’ve not done this before or ever gone on a cruise, so this was all part of the adventure 🚢. We got lucky with good weather and managed to pass the 29.5hr journey 😴 with an overnight sleep, whale spotting, lots of eating, card games and some onboard entertainment. The whole process (getting on / during / getting off) was pretty seamless. Coming into Portsmouth was quite interesting watching the hover craft launch and seeing the old aircraft carriers up close. Almost made Portsmouth look pretty 😂

And now we’re home, and feeling very lucky to have been away for 3 weeks, experiencing all these wonderful places and STILL liking each other😂 (although Florence has just told me she never liked her brother in the first place 🤪).

I’ll do a wrap up post later in the week with some key thoughts and tips for your own future trips.

What can we say about the Pyrenees ⛰️ that will do it justice?! It was truly out of this world, Marc and I could have spent the whole trip exploring and hiking there, so much to do if you’re after action and breathtaking natural beauty! The kids enjoyed it, but were less keen on the hiking part, they did say they want to go back for when it’s ski ⛷️ season 😂

Being in a MH that’s 7.5m long, you obviously have to take great care in moving around and do your homework on your routes 🗺️. You definitely can’t just guess and hope for the best. Marc has been an absolute trooper being the lead* driver whilst out here, even getting us up the Pyrenees with the many switchbacks (which had me holding my breath quite a bit, IYKYK). The kids and I came up with a new name for the switch backs, we referred to them as spicy 🥵

As well as hiking, we had a go at white water rafting with TOM RAFTING 🛶 which we highly recommend if you’re ever in that area. A really well organised and fun morning out on the river, with a top team of instructors!

Safe to say we loved this part of the trip and will definitely return some day.

We moved on and stopped at the foot of the Pyrenees in the Basque region for a night and explored the River Nive. Now on to our final leg, heading to Biarritz!

The Pyrenees really delivered 🙌🏻

So we stopped at a town called Cazoubon for a day and a night & decided to swiftly move on. Maybe we’ve been spoilt so far, but this place just felt a bit off. Nothing to pinpoint but you know when you just don’t get a good feeling. Maybe the grumpy French fishermen had something to do with it when we went paddle boarding out on the large lake?!

Anyway, we did some paddle boarding 💧, biking, enjoyed the huge outdoor pool & experienced our first bout of rain with a 3am storm (that wasn’t forecast ☔️). Marc was stealth and out there like a shot, putting everything in the garage before it got soaked! What a good boy he is 🤓

No toll roads to our next destination, but lots of leafy trees and 100s of sunflowers 🌻. All the journeys have been so picturesque!

We’ve mixed it up & are now in Cauterets in the Pyrenees Mountains, looking for some action 💪🏻 ⛰️ . It was quite a challenging climb to get up here in the MH & the temperature has definitely dropped, which tbh is a welcome change to the last two weeks. No campsite this time, we’re ‘roughing’ it in one of the aire spaces, which at €12 a night is not bad ☺️

Let’s see what the mountains 🏔️ bring us…?

P.s. the cable cars are not for the faint hearted, but the VIEWS were 100% worth it 😍
