Hit a pothole recently? It might have caused more damage than you can see.

Even if the car still feels fine, a heavy impact can affect tyres, wheels, wheel alignment, steering or suspension. Signs to watch for include:

âś“ Steering pulling to one side
âś“ New vibrations through the wheel
âś“ Uneven tyre wear
âś“ Knocking or unusual noises
âś“ Visible tyre or wheel damage

Warning light on? Don’t ignore it.

Dashboard warning lights are your car’s way of telling you something needs attention. Getting it checked early can often stop a small issue becoming a much bigger repair.

The four shown here are some of the most important to recognise:

Engine management - could point to an engine, emissions or sensor fault.
Battery - may indicate a charging or alternator problem.
Oil pressure - can mean the engine isn’t getting the oil pressure it needs.
Brake system - could indicate low brake fluid or a fault within the braking system.

If one of these lights appears, stays on or keeps coming back, it’s worth getting it looked at.

The first question is usually: can it be repaired, or does the tyre need replacing?

It depends on where the puncture is and the condition of the tyre.

âś“ Punctures within the permitted central tread area can often be repaired
âś“ Damage close to the shoulder or sidewall usually means replacement
âś“ The size and type of damage also matters
âś“ The tyre must still be in a safe, roadworthy condition

Simply plugging every puncture isn’t the answer. A proper inspection will tell us whether a safe repair can be carried out in line with the relevant repair standard.

An MOT emissions failure can be frustrating, but it doesn’t necessarily mean the worst.

High emissions can be caused by a number of issues, including:

âś“ A faulty oxygen sensor
âś“ Problems with the catalytic converter
âś“ EGR or DPF issues
âś“ Fuel or ignition system faults
âś“ Engine management problems

The important thing is finding out why it failed rather than simply replacing parts and hoping for the best.

A diagnostic assessment can help pinpoint the cause, get the right repair carried out and get your car ready for its MOT retest.

Does your air con smell like a wet dog?

That musty, damp smell when you switch the air conditioning on can be a sign that bacteria, mould and moisture have built up within the system.

Other possible causes include:

âś“ A dirty or clogged pollen filter
âś“ Moisture trapped around the evaporator
âś“ Bacteria and mould developing in the system
âś“ An air con system that needs cleaning and treating

The good news? You don’t have to put up with it.

An air con clean, antibacterial treatment and, where needed, a replacement pollen filter can help get things smelling fresh again.
