Power tailgate not working correctly?

What used to be something as simple as latch and a pair of gas struts is now a safety monitored system with an ECU, software updates and electric motors.

There are multiple way these systems can fail but the most common and probably the simplest is bent hinges……. Yes they could be stronger but that costs money and well…… profit would of been lost on production! 🫣

The most important thing to remember is never force a powered tailgate! This one had and had bent the hinges ever so slightly as the picture shows. Just enough to upset the finely calibrated system.

Also a fractured wire in the main harness that feeds the tailgate

The repair: Tailgate removed and a new harness installed and a pair of new hinges. Then carefully aligned and calibrated.

Something as simple as opening the tailgate can take alot of specialist care and knowledge to repair. 😎

Onto the next job!

Everyday you see something new. This L322 had hit a pot hole rupturing the tyre. It had also folded the front left shock absorber so it was basically touching the wheel. Surprising the alloy was in perfect condition.

This Evoque came in with only one key and it would only start the car. It wouldn’t lock or unlock off the fob. Following SDD’s procedures we updated the BCM and finally replaced the KVM and added a second genuine key. The car had 8 keys previously programmed to it so all these were removed and only the two present left able to start and open the car.

We were able to do this with the dealer tooling as we’ve passed SERMI accreditation. Not all workshops have this.

We had a D5 come down to us from just north of Preston with a rough running complaint and smoking excessively

The owner had had the turbos replaced recently and the “workshop” doing the work convinced them it needed the dpf deleted. After the work was done it never ran right and was handed back to the owner to deal with. Another workshop took it on and found the throttle valve in the exhaust had failed which would of caused the turbo failure. They managed to do a temporary repair to make it safe to drive and the car arrived with us.

Inspection and a road test found the dpf had been gutted and the high pressure egr valve blanked. But the throttle valve hadn’t been mapped off or gutted. This was causing the main running concern. But the car was producing massive volumes of black smoke every on a static rev of the engine with no load. It filled the road when driven 🙄🤦‍♂️

Egr blank removed and genuine factory software flashed onto the PCM and we found lots of dpf/scr related faults as we expected. But the excessive smoke disappeared.

Brand new dpf/scr fitted with a new exhaust throttle valve and also refitted the low pressure egr filter. This had been left out from the idiot doing the turbo job not that it would of mattered to be blocked but it also acts as the gasket between the valve and cooler. This was blowing soot out the joints. Also about 10 critical bolts were missing on the engine that the turbo job had left out. It also looked like they had removed the full engine to do this🫣. (Turbo’s on a V6 D5 is an engine in job). They had also left the AC system completely empty, another expense the owne would have to incur to completely regas the system instead of a drain and refill.

Road tested and all back as factory intended with no legal issues implied from having previously having its emissions devices removed. Which even for a non mechanical person was obvious as the back of the silver car was covered in black soot from the tail pipes.

Yet another example of be careful who you let work on your car.

Leave it to reliable trustworthy experts👍

Be careful who you let work on your cars…..

This Defender 110 came in completely dead. To the point it wouldn’t even roll. Nothing electrical would work. It would randomly wake up and drive perfectly but then die again.

After can bus and flex ray checks we removed the Bcm/gwm. Only to find someone had previously been in there, adding wires onto critical wires and instead of crimping or soldering them securely. They had just twisted them together and wrapping them with PCV tape 🤯

We aren’t sure what the point of these extra wires were as they just ran in series with the factory wires and were left in the poor state we found them but after this car was sold someone somewhere has paid for this work……. 🫣
