The Engine’s Choir

The car had been coughing for weeks, a rasping growl that made every drive feel haunted. I thought it was just dust choking the filter, maybe a leaf or two lodged where it didn’t belong. But when I finally pried the casing open, I found them.

Two mice. Not scattered, not torn apart—just curled together, as if they’d chosen companionship over escape. Their tiny bodies were stiff, their fur streaked with soot, their paws locked in a silent grip.

The engine had been their executioner. Every ignition a thunderclap, every mile a relentless hymn of steel and fire. The roar didn’t just drown their squeaks—it became their requiem. They hadn’t died alone; they’d died together, swallowed by a machine that never noticed.

I stared at them longer than I should have. The filter wasn’t just clogged—it was a coffin. A tomb carried unknowingly through every journey, rattling with ghosts.
