Self-driving vehicles are getting a legal rulebook that decides whether they're safe enough to be allowed on Britain's roads at all. It affects every road user, not just the people who'd actually get in one.

MAG joined one of two Department for Transport roundtables on the draft rules this week, a small session with just Brake and the Road Safety Foundation alongside us. We raised where the draft already gets it right, principle 7 names motorcyclists specifically, and where it still needs work before that's actually tested.

The point that mattered most by the end came from CCAV's own team, not us: everyone is a road user, so you don't have to ride, drive, or own a car to be affected by how these vehicles behave. They were explicit that they want individuals to respond directly, not just organisations, and that you don't need to be a technical expert to have a view worth submitting.

The government published its response to the eVED consultation on 13 July. If you're one of the UK's electric motorcyclists, it won't touch you: motorcycles stay exempt from the new electric vehicle road tax when it lands in April 2028.

Except there are fewer of you than there were in Q3 2024. DfT's figures show 13,327 electric motorcycles licensed on UK roads this quarter, down from 14,358 eighteen months ago. So we're not popping champagne over an exemption nobody was ever proposing to remove.

But what about the 99% of us on petrol, still paying conventional VED that ignores the government's own logic? Their case for eVED is that heavier vehicles do more damage and should pay more. A motorcycle weighs a fraction of a car and does a fraction of the damage, electric or not. Apply that properly, and it isn't just electric bikes that should be paying less.

We've told the Treasury as much.

Ride over a raised table at a side junction lately? It's there for pedestrians crossing safely, and nobody checked what it does to a bike riding over it.

The Department for Transport has committed £4.5 billion to active travel, including a £10 million fund to help councils trial new street designs faster. Good money, in principle. But the strategy contains no assessment of what any of it does to motorcyclists, and the criteria for that fund haven't even been published yet.

We've written to Active Travel England asking for three things: published criteria for the fund, proper guidance in the plans councils actually use, and a design check that includes riders before schemes get built. Not a veto on active travel. Just a check.

The government's Integrated National Transport Strategy runs to 92 pages. Motorcycling gets six references. Not one is a policy commitment.

Ash Filmer rides a 636 Ninja with ‘Marmite’ livery. You've probably clocked him at Wednesday Bikers Nite, at shows, at rallies around the county. Now he's doing something about the fact that riders have no seat at the table.

He's launched Severn Vale MAG, covering Tewkesbury, Cheltenham, Gloucester and Stroud. Since 2010 he's been asking Cheltenham for 24/7 bus lane access for bikes and getting nowhere. Meanwhile rider KSI figures keep climbing and the county draws up transport plans without a single motorcyclist in the room.

That changes when there's a group behind the voice instead of one person shouting into the wind. Regular meetings start soon for anyone who rides and wants a say.
