Developing a new Sabre Stage 5 ECU upgrade for the RS and ST MK2, let’s take a look at the benefits…

The 2.5 turbo platform as used in the RS and ST MK2 continues to be enjoyed by many, and there is no sign of a slow down when it comes to tuning these engines. We should start by acknowledging that we have offered a very comprehensive Stage 4 upgrade path for the last few years including big turbo conversions up to 600bhp, and this remains the best option for most set-ups that follow the traditional hardware locations.

Of course, more recently we have seen an increase in alternative big turbo conversions, notably sidewinders and other non-traditional hardware layouts. This requires a very different approach to tuning and with the development of the Sabre Stage 5 platform we offer a very comprehensive tuning option that fully optimises these platforms with power goals up to 500-700bhp.

🔥Key Technical Developments 🔥

⚙ MAF Delete & Speed-Density Conversion:
The factory Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor is completely unpinned and deleted. The ECU’s airflow model now follows Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) and Intake Air Temperature (IAT) to mathematically track air mass and load calculation.

⚙ 4″ – 5″ Large Bore Crossover Pipes:
This major increase in cross-sectional area eliminates pre-compressor restriction, lowering turbocharger discharge temperatures and optimising compressor efficiency at high pressure ratios.

⚙ Unusual Layout Flexibility (Sidewinder & External Wastegates):
The architecture is fully optimised for high-clearance sidewinder manifolds that reposition the turbocharger to the side of the engine bay and incorporate very short intake tracts.

⚙ Advanced Fuel Injection Dynamics (1000–1500cc):
Engineered specifically for motorsport-grade injectors (e.g., 1000cc, 1200cc, and 1500cc configurations). Full control of large injectors for drivability, economy and emissions.

⚙ Class-Leading Knock Control:
Optimised factory Bosch individual-cylinder closed-loop knock control. Ignition timing is adapted dynamically per cylinder based on targeted acoustic frequencies, providing an essential safety net when running high boost on pump fuels or E85.

⚙ Factory Traction Control (ESP) Enabled:
Historically, unplugging the MAF sensor drops CAN-bus torque synchronisation, instantly disabling factory traction control. The Stage 5 calibration retains the factory ABS/ESP module and allows full use of the ESP button without dash lights.

⚙ 4WD Haldex Conversion Compatibility: Developed to fully support custom 4WD Haldex conversions allowing you to switch from FWD to AWD seamlessly.

⚙ OEM Drivability, Idle, and Cold Start:
Enjoy perfect closed loop fuel control, economy and emissions. Cold start, idle and drivability retain full OEM+ features and allow the car to drive and function as you would expect.

It's hard to be beat an RS... unless of course you have two 🔥🔥

Keith's RS MK1 is very tidy throughout. It drove okay with 270bhp on the existing tune, but it wasn't setting his world on fire. When you are looking for more excitement, then it's a guranteed upgrade with Sabre. Nobody does RS like we do!

⚙ RS MK1 - Sabre Stage 2
⚙ Power: 321bhp
⚙ Torque: 382lbs/ft

The difference isn't even close to the before and after, it is a total transformation in response, drivability and performance... just epic.

Moving on, well the RS MK2 is certainly a very different kind of beast. Super condition throughout and low miles, but being bone stock Keith really felt it was lacking in performance and drivability compared to his Sabre RS MK1. He wasn't looking to do any hardware upgrades just yet, so this is pure optimisation of the original set-up on a good fuel. Forget your flash and dash, this is tuning customised at every level in order to achieve absolute performance while keeping eveything within the limits including retaining safety headroom. No guesswork or settling for less. Every Sabre upgrade is extensively developed to be the absolute best at any level of tuning and modifications.

⚙ RS MK2 - Sabre Stage 1
⚙ Power: 347bhp
⚙ Torque: 386lbs/ft

You cannot fail to be impressed by the power delivery, strong and smooth pulling all the way 6500rpm. Again, it is a total transformation where everything is on point.

Great to see two stunning RS models that are so very different, but even greater to get out and drive which is what it is all about.

For all your RS tuning (MK1/MK2/MK3), from simple upgrades to big performance, Sabre have you covered...

We are starting a new series of technical articles that will cover all aspects of performance and tuning. The aim is to create a repository that helps you understand the how and why beyond the general questions and what tuning your car really involves. First up!

Why unlocking the fuel system is so important for the Fiesta ST MK8 and Puma ST…

If you are running a hybrid turbo on the 1.5 EcoBoost, you’ve probably hit the infamous factory fueling wall.

Right now, standard Stage 3 tunes force a hard cap at 0.84 lambda. Why? Because the stock hardware simply cannot cope. While this level is just about "okay" for a clean dyno run, it leaves absolutely zero margin for error on the road in real conditions. If you catch a bad batch of fuel or do a long, high-speed pull, your ECU’s built-in safety nets are completely paralyzed. It wants to dump fuel to save your pistons, but the hardware won't let it.

The Sabre fix. 🛠️

Our upgrade isn't about blindly running rich or splashing fuel for the sake of it. It’s about headroom. The fuel system upgrade unlocks the volumetric capacity to supply down to 0.74 lambda all the way to redline.

When your ECU detects a spike in heat or knock, it finally has the capacity to instantly protect your engine on demand.

The ST MK4 continues to excel in all areas as we develop the platform further. We offer very detailed custom tuning to suit the individual driver and hardware set-up. A simple fact of life, we don’t all like the same things from food to hobbies, that much is true! So rather than cookie cut your generic tune, why not benefit from the Sabre approach that allows you to have the car that you would like…

Luke and his ST are no strangers to tuning, but this time he wanted something that works for him. The Sabre 450RS is a proven powerhouse turbo that opens up the performance of the ST 2.3 engine. Fast response akin to standard, but a powerband that pulls harder throughout and longer. With more power we need more control. A smooth linear power delivery was requested giving a progressive and then flat torque curve. Beyond this we dial in 1st and 2nd gear to give ultimate traction just on the side of slip, that’s the usable sling shot that even a FWD car can achieve.

The ST MK4 is growing into a serious platform with Sabre options for the manual and auto at all levels.

A little bit of a hidden gem for the ST MK3 owners. The Sabre 400RS turbo fills the gap where you want fast response like standard, but where a Powermax or hybrid turbo leaves you really wanting more than just 310-330bhp.

Ben's car was remote e-tuned a couple of years back with multiple map options for different power levels and overrun burbles/pops to suit. This is a stock engine, just typical bolt-on modifications coupled with the 400RS turbo.

Many owners can be sold a package and a badge as being 300, 340 etc but rarely know if it is the real deal. Ben was quoted 360-370 and a recent dyno confirmed this with 367bhp & 346lbs/ft pulling from 2500-6500rpm. This is exceptional power, response and reliability for the ST MK3 platform. When your ST is faster than your dad's MK3 RS at "400", well the dyno only confirms what was already known!!
