The Practical Driving Test
I often get asked what is expected of you during your test, so here is a summary. The Practical Driving Test lasts approximately 40-minutes. Below are the main parts of your driving test:
👁️ An eyesight check
You must be able to read a number plate from 20 metres.
❓ ‘Show me, Tell me’ vehicle safety questions
There are 7 'show me' questions, one of which you'll be asked to operate one of the car controls whilst driving during your test. There are 14 'tell me' questions, one of which you'll be asked whilst the car is stationary at the start of your test. I'll send a copy of all 21 questions for you to learn.
🚗 General driving ability
All driving tests involve a variety of road, junction, and traffic conditions. You'll be expected to drive these competently, in accordance with the Highway Code. It is therefore essential you have good knowledge of the HIghway Code. Read it, understand it, and apply it to your driving.
🚘 Manoeuvering your vehicle
You'll be asked to complete one reverse manoeuvre. This could be a reverse bay park, a forward pay park (reversing out after), a parallel park, or to pull up on the right-hand side of the road and reverse the car approximately 2 car lengths, keeping the car reasonably close to the kerb. The manoeuvre must be completed with safety and control.
🚦 Independent driving
At least half of the driving time you'll be driving independently. This is done by either following signs or following the directions of a satellite navigation system. The Examiners use Tom-Tom and I have one just like theirs to help you become familiar with it before your test.
🛑🫷🏻Controlled stop, otherwise known as the ‘emergency stop’.
Not all tests have an emergency stop, but if yours does the Examiner will give you a briefing before asking you to complete one. Like all driving test subjects, I will ensure you have practised this before your test.
When preparing for your test, my plan is to minimise surprises on the day by giving you a full briefing, practicing on actual test routes and conducting a mock test. Every driver I have ever known gets nervous about their test. By preparing thoroughly and being competent in all elements you should at least be able to reduce the nerves and give yourself the best possible chance of success.
If there is anything else you'd like to know about the test, or any other part of learning to drive, please ask in the comments.
All the best,
Peter
