New rules for test bookings.

📢 The rules for booking a practical car driving test are changing.

From 31 March 2026, learner drivers and approved driving instructors (ADIs) will only be able to change a driving test booking up to 2 times.

A change includes:
- changing the date or time
- changing the test centre
- swapping an appointment with another learner

If you’re an ADI, please make sure your pupils only book their test when they’re ready as swapping between pupils will count towards this limit. You can set times when you're available to take your pupils to their driving tests. This stops your pupils from booking tests at times that do not work for you.

👉 When this comes into force, everyone with a driving test booked will have 2 changes available, regardless of how many changes they may have already made.

This change is part of the outcome of our consultation to improve the way driving tests are booked.

📢 Important Update for Approved Driving Instructors (ADIs/PDIs) from DVSA 🤝

The DVSA is rolling out significant changes in the coming months aimed at improving the fairness and stability of the driving test booking system and reducing current waiting times.

Here is a breakdown of the key measures that will affect how you and your pupils manage tests:

1. 🔒 Booking Service Restriction
The booking service will be changed to allow only the learner car driver to book and manage their own practical driving test appointments.

Impact on ADIs: While the exact mechanism is still to be confirmed, this is a clear measure to tackle third-party test touting. This means you will need to clearly communicate with your pupils about their individual test management responsibility and ensure they are booking when they are truly ready.

2. ⏱️ New Limits on Test Changes and Swaps
New restrictions are being introduced to discourage the use of 'placeholder' bookings and frequent cancellations/swaps that contribute to system instability:

Limit on Changes: Learner car drivers will only be able to move or swap their test date twice.

Geographical Limit: There will also be a limit on the area a learner can move a test to once it has been booked.

Action for You: This strongly reinforces the need for robust pupil assessment. Ensure you are conducting thorough mock tests and advising pupils only to book when they are genuinely test-ready to avoid pupils being forced to take a test they are likely to fail or losing their fee.

3. 💂 Increased Testing Capacity
To help significantly tackle the national waiting times, the DVSA will be using Ministry of Defence (MOD) driving examiners for up to 12 months.

What this means: This injection of resource should lead to an increase in available test slots, easing pressure on the system and potentially improving overall test availability for your pupils.

The DVSA's goal is to create a more efficient and equitable system. Your professional guidance will be more crucial than ever in helping your pupils navigate these new rules.

Please monitor official DVSA channels for precise implementation dates and further operational guidance.

This is your last chance to book our 3 Simple Steps, on Sunday 25th 1900.

If you have a Part 3 or SC, yes they are still happening, then this short workshop will help you score highly.

Don't be like the person I have spoken to tonight who went elsewhere, was taught around See it, Say it, Sort it and when it went wrong they couldn't sort it! Why because See it, Say it Sort it, works when used in role play situations, but we don't use role-play in Part 3 or SC anymore. Instead we have real life humans, who are affected by emotions and thoughts!

If they'd have booked this workshop they'd have got a different perspective on training learners! Instead they are looking for a new job!
