Memoirs of a driving instructor :
First steps :
Recieved reply very promptly, no e mail in those days, good all fashioned letter.
Great news i had been asked to attend for an interview the following week.
No formal qualifications required,
Had to reply immediately as very limited number of franchises available.
One small detail, if successful at the interview, payment for course required in advance £1000 !!!!
Well that was it.
over before it began, dream shattered.
My wife assured me we could find a way,
and decided to go anyway.
I had never had a proper interview before, or since. (when i got the job at the meat plant, the bloke just took me around, asked if i had been banged up, could hump a side of beef,
and get there for six the next morning )
and that was it !
This was different, a formal interview in a posh hotel in town.
Was begining to have doubts,
Where could i hire a suit ?
What if they asked why i never bothered to collect my cse certificates from school ? Why was i working in a meat plant ? And what about my driving record ? Not good !
I had been pulled by the rossers half a dozen times for ragging my ford capri
and using air horns late at night !
but worse than that i had points
for crashing a wagon on a mad dash to work one morning !
Decided to go anyway

Friday April 14 th : 87 :
Quietly relaxing at home enjoying a weekend off.life good but not going well on the work front ! Jim the manager was taken out into the car park with two big men in suits, and we all knew it was the end, he called us into the office and bid us a tearful goodbye.
His replacement would start with immediate effect on Monday !
Had been wanting to move on
anyway , browsing the small ads in the jobs page of the local rag, one caught my attention
"love to drive " want to teach ?
Reply to box number.
Yes, this was it,
a training course to become a driving instructor with the countrys biggest and most well know driving school.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
Sent my details and eagerly awaited my reply. Time to turn the page
and begin a new chapter ?

Memoirs of a driving instructor:A few short notes to act as background.(Autumn 1977 )
Learning to drive , like most things in our lives, is a journey, with a begining, middle and ending.
This journey varies in length for each person !!
My own was taking a little longer than expected !!
I had neither a car of my own,or a family car to practice in.
Only my driving lessons,
and after my first instructor had vanished, and my second one was
getting even scarier, i was losing hope. Fortunately, i was allocated a new younger tutor who had only just started out, and everything finally started to come together at last.The time eventually came to book the test, which the driving school did on your behalf, without any consultation or discussion.
Kevin, my new instructor reassured me everything would be ok,
and the countdown began !!
