Heading off on a road trip this summer? Give your car a few minutes of attention before you hit the road.

There's nothing worse than a breakdown when you're hours from home, the car's packed to the roof, and everyone just wants to get to their destination.

Before you set off, it's worth checking a few basics:
✔ Tyre pressures and tread depth (especially if you're carrying extra passengers and luggage)
✔ Engine oil and coolant levels

Van suddenly feeling sluggish or not pulling like it used to? Your EGR valve could be one of the reasons why.

The EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system helps reduce emissions, but over time, carbon can build up inside the system and start causing problems with how your engine runs.

You might notice things like loss of power, poor acceleration, rough running, increased fuel consumption, an engine management light or your van dropping into limp mode.

When an EGR valve becomes clogged or stuck, it can affect airflow and your engine’s overall performance.

Depending on the problem, the EGR may be able to be cleaned or it might need replacing. Getting it diagnosed early can help prevent the issue from becoming a bigger headache.

If your van isn’t driving quite right, don’t just put up with it and hope it sorts itself out.

Timing chains gradually stretch over time, and the problem is your engine ECU often won’t pick this up until the timing is already far enough out to start causing issues.

The early warning signs can be easy to miss. You might notice a slight rattle when starting the car from cold, a rough idle, or that the car just doesn’t feel as responsive as usual - and none of these will necessarily trigger a warning light.

By the time a warning does appear, the chain may have already jumped a tooth or caused damage to the guides and tensioners.

At that point, you’re no longer talking about prevention. You could be looking at a much bigger repair or, in the worst cases, serious engine damage.
That’s why knowing your vehicle’s service history and getting things checked early is far better than relying on a dashboard light to tell you something’s wrong.
