MOT vs. Service — They Are NOT the Same Thing 🚗🔧
We often hear: “But it passed its MOT, so it must be fine?”
This is where it’s really important to understand the difference between an MOT and a service.
An MOT is a legal safety and emissions test, but the standard it is tested against is actually very different from a basic service. An MOT is not designed to assess the overall condition, reliability or future maintenance needs of your vehicle.
In fact, there are many things that can be perfectly acceptable under the MOT test standard but still worth addressing during a service.
🔧 An MOT checks whether your vehicle meets the minimum legal requirements at the time of the test.
🛠️ A service looks much more broadly at the condition and maintenance of your vehicle, helping identify wear, deterioration and potential problems before they become bigger, more expensive issues.
For example, an MOT doesn't mean your:
• Engine oil is in good condition
• Filters are healthy
• Brakes are operating at their best
• Tyres have plenty of life left
• Suspension components aren't beginning to wear
• Battery is performing well
• Belts and hoses are in good condition
• Vehicle is going to remain problem-free for the next 12 months
The MOT standard is, in many areas, a minimum threshold — not a measure of what is mechanically "good".
That's why we always recommend thinking of your MOT and service as two different things.

👉 Service = How is the vehicle actually performing and what does it need to keep it reliable?
A car can pass its MOT and still benefit hugely from a service.

Don't just ask whether your car has passed its MOT — ask how your car is actually doing. ❤️🔧
