“Hold on… I’ve got an idea.” 🇬🇧🚗

Returning from this year's fantastic International Mini Meet, held in Poland. 🇵🇱 Having covered thousands of miles, disaster struck while queuing to board the Harwich–Hook of Holland ferry at 10pm. A failing clutch release bearing on Alec Tulloch's 1961 Austin Mini Cooper threatened to bring his Mini adventure to an unscheduled halt.

Fortunately, classic car owners are a resourceful bunch, and after some comms through social media including Jeff Ruggles, editor of Mini World Magazine, Bob had an idea which might just save their bacon.

Travelling with friends Bob Robertson in his 1967 Austin Mini Cooper and Keith Rogerson and his partner in their 2001 MGF, Alec checked the MGOC Spares website and found exactly what he needed, a Classic Mini pre-Verto clutch release bearing (GRB238).
When the ferry docked in Harwich at 6.30am, the convoy headed straight to MGOC Spares Cambridge to buy a new bearing and get to work.

As a time-served mechanic, Alec had wisely left the otherwise inaccessible bellhousing bolts out when carrying out previous work. That bit of foresight paid dividends, allowing the bearing to be replaced in the car park in under 30 minutes.
Crisis over. Adventure resumed. Alec proudly announced "We'll be back in Edinburgh for tea. My wife tells me it'll be pizza!" 🍕

🔧 Running repairs at 'Spares! 🚗✨

Nothing to Declare? 🇪🇸 🚗
We couldn’t help but admire this striking Vermillion Red 1980 MGB GT during a recent visit from the Coventry & Warwickshire MGOC to the Club Shop.
Owner Rob Bird bought the car in 2019 with just 17,000 miles on the clock, although the purchase wasn’t exactly planned!

While holidaying in Spain and looking at properties, Rob was invited out for a drive by the previous owner. One spirited run up a smooth mountain road to a mountain-top café later, the conversation had completely changed ..

“They talked me out of buying a house in Spain… and talked me into buying their MG instead!”

Despite already owning three MGs at home, Rob couldn’t resist adding the GT alongside his 1959 MGA Coupe and MG TF LE500.

The GT has since become a rolling advert for MGOC Spares, featuring:

A proper Midget rescue story 🛠️
Meet Ben Burdett, 22, university student down in Wi******er 🎓, and the proud custodian of a 1974 registered MG Midget he's owned since he was 18.

Yesterday Ben was heading north from Hampshire en route to Edinburgh 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 when his Midget broke down in slow moving traffic in the middle lane of the M1 just outside Northampton With the help of the RAC (thank you, Mark, in torrential rain 🌧️), Ben had a decision to make: accept a tow to a local garage that might see him Monday, or push on.
He chose us. ✅

"I thought, I'm close to Cambridge, I'm close to MGOC Spares and I just knew you'd have the part."
Ben nursed the car, arriving at 8:30pm to a closed shop, and not for the first time, he admits he slept in the Midget overnight 😴. Having the good sense to grab a Pad Thai first at the nearest pub 🍜.

Our early birds opened up at 7am ☀️, took one look at our slightly frozen visitor, and got him straight inside the showroom to warm up with a cuppa ☕ while the MGOC workshop team got to work 🔧.

Despite a full diary, the lads squeezed Ben's poorly Midget in, fitted the part from our shelves, and had him back on the road within a couple of hours, Edinburgh-bound. 🚗💨

There's a lovely thread running through Ben's ownership too. He's been in touch with a previous owner who had the car from 1988-93, when she was 19 herself. Like a true enthusiast, Ben showed three files bursting with history 📁. These cars carry their stories with them wherever they go. ❤️
