๐Ÿ’ก PRO TIP: Suspension bushes
When we think about how long suspension bushes should last, itโ€™s natural to compare todayโ€™s replacements with the bushes fitted to an MG when it was new. But thereโ€™s an interesting point thatโ€™s easily overlooked.

๐Ÿš— Letโ€™s think about how these cars were used when they were new. An MG in the 1960s, 70s or 80s was often a daily driver, covering regular mileage and, importantly, regularly exercising its suspension.

Today, many classic MGs lead a very different life. They may cover relatively few miles, spend long periods standing and sometimes receive considerably more cleaning than they ever did when they were new!

๐Ÿงช Ozone, age and exposure to some chemical cleaners and storage conditions can all contribute to the deterioration of a vehicles exposed rubber components.

๐Ÿ”ง Thereโ€™s another factor too: how the bushes are fitted.
Over more than 45 years, weโ€™ve seen an awful lot of MGs and, occasionally, the fundamentals of fitting have been overlooked.

The condition of the chassis components where the bush is fitted, the lubrication used during installation and ensuring the suspension isnโ€™t tightened while the bushes are being held in a preloaded position can all influence how a bush performs over its service life.

And this isnโ€™t something unique to classic cars. Weโ€™ve seen dried and cracked original bushes on barn-find Rover and MG vehicles that had covered remarkably few road miles. Time, environment and lack of use can be just as interesting as the mileage on the clock.

๐Ÿ’ก Itโ€™s also worth knowing that the traditional TOPHAT bush design is more exposed to ozone and the elements. Where appropriate, the stronger metalastic MGB V8-style bush can offer considerably greater longevity.

MG Tech, Roger Parker talks us through his 50+ years of experienced, hands-on observations here https://www.mgocspares.co.uk/blog/1287/extending-the-life-of-rubber-parts-on-your-classic

None of this means we stop looking at the products themselves. Quite the opposite.

๐Ÿ” At MGOC Spares, we continually review, assess and evaluate the products we supply. We work closely with our established manufacturing partners and are always looking for opportunities to improve the parts we offer and understand how they perform in the real world.

After all, choosing suspension bushes isnโ€™t simply about finding a replacement. There are different materials, specifications and designs, each with their own characteristics and compromises. It all depends on what you want from your car.

Thatโ€™s where our experience comes in. We're always happy to discuss your parts needs and help make you make the right selection for you and your MG, with experienced sales team who provide unpressured, expert guidance based on many years' experience.

๐Ÿ‘ Because when it comes to classic MGs, with decades of product development and ingenuity,โ€” thereโ€™s often a choice, and weโ€™re here to help you make an informed one.

โšก PRO TIP: Batteries

Before you convert to 12 volt, check the numbers!

Cost or availability are the usual reasons for going single 12V. The sums are worth doing first.
A standard pair of 421 6V batteries in an MGB was rated at 56Ah, with heavy-duty versions at 63 to 72Ah and a typical pair provides around 400 CCA.

When converting to a single 12V battery, donโ€™t just look at whether it fits the battery compartment. Check both the Ah capacity and the Cold Cranking Amperes (CCA) rating. This figure is actually a really good indicator of starting performance, when your batteries are placed under greatest strain.

A smaller battery may physically fit, but that doesnโ€™t necessarily mean it will provide the same starting performance or reserve capacity as the original pair.

๐Ÿชซ And thereโ€™s the problem: finding a modern 12V battery that fits the original battery compartment while providing both substantial capacity and strong CCA can be difficult.

For MGA, pre-74 MGB and MGC owners, a 12V conversion can therefore involve a compromise and long term, can be a bit of a non-starter! ๐Ÿ˜

Thatโ€™s why weโ€™ve gone to the trouble of developing an affordable, high-power solution but keeping to the original twin, 6v battery configuration specifically for classic MG owners, under our Q Parts brand โ€” backed by a 2-year guarantee.

๐Ÿ’ช Trust us, weโ€™ve got you covered.

Worth knowing before you commit: our own 421 6V batteries are rated at an impressive 80Ah and 600 CCA. Thatโ€™s substantially more capacity and starting power than even the original specification, while retaining the original battery boxes and requiring no rewiring.

Show Stopper ๐Ÿ”ฅ

We see a lot of MGs, and many are a wonderful reflection of their owners โ€” personalised, upgraded and tailored with modern accessories to make them just right for the way they drive.

Then there are the cars rebuilt to concours standards, where every component has been painstakingly returned to immaculate, factory-fresh condition โ€” right down to the stickers, labels and the details most of us would never notice.

At a recent show near Bedford, we came across something rather special- a true rarity.

A 1976 USA-spec Midget 1500, subjected to what appears to be a truly extraordinary nut-and-bolt restoration, retaining the full specification of a car originally destined for the American market. ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ”ง

You'd have to travel across the Atlantic to find one quite like it in its natural habitat. Among the details that had us reaching for our imaginary anoraks:

๐Ÿ”ง Correct 1ยผ" Zenith-Stromberg 150 CD4 carburettor
๐ŸŒก๏ธ USA-spec air cleaner with heat-resistant ducting
โšซ Charcoal evaporative emissions canister
โ™ป๏ธ Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve
๐Ÿ’จ Exhaust-port air injection, driven by the air pump beneath the alternator
โš™๏ธ Anti-run-on valve
๐ŸŒง๏ธ Triple windscreen wipers
๐Ÿ’ก Rear lamps with red over amber lenses
๐Ÿ”ถ Additional side marker lamps
๐Ÿ”ฒ Built-in number plate lamps
๐Ÿ“ Left-hand-drive dashboard with pillow-style fascia and square gauges

Everywhere you looked there was another detail to discover.

Sadly, we didn't get the opportunity to speak with the owner and find out how this extraordinary restoration came together. But for a bunch of MG nerds, standing there quietly drinking it all in was pleasure enough. ๐Ÿค“

A rarity, restored with remarkable attention to detail.

Now that's a show stopper. ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ

You Can Do It in a B! ๐Ÿš—๐Ÿ’จ

Meet Rhys, new to classic car ownership and already throwing himself into MG life at the deep end!

Fed up with his Euro Box, Rhys bought his pride and joy in January โ€” a 1974 MGB Roadster in Harvest Gold with wire wheels, purchased from its previous owner in Somerset. He bought it on body condition rather than mechanicals, knowing the latter should be relatively straightforward to sort.

By April, the tired engine was leaking oil seemingly everywhere, so Rhys lined up a newly remanufactured engine through MGOC Spares, fitted by the MGOC Workshop. ๐Ÿ”ง

Then came a rather more dramatic electrical episode. A short behind the fuel gauge led to a fire which cooked the alternator diodes, while an undersized battery was making restarts increasingly laboured. Rhys popped into the shop for a replacement alternator, and we helped him fit it and get back on his way. ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ง

Rhys has just graduated with a degree in Computer Science, but that's not all he's been doing. Alongside his studies, he's been undertaking the rather formidable challenge of learning The Knowledge โ€” the rigorous examination required of London black cab drivers, learning the capital's streets and routes in detail without relying on maps. ๐Ÿš•๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ

And he's clearly developing a taste for driving challenges. Last week he took his MGB to Thruxton, where he enjoyed a session on the skid pan. ๐Ÿ

Next week, the intrepid B owner is taking things a little further, driving to CERN in Switzerland for a tour of the Large Hadron Collider. ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ญ๐Ÿ”ฌ

From a first classic, to rebuilding an engine, sorting electrical gremlins, learning The Knowledge and tackling a skid pan โ€” Rhys is certainly showing us that you can do it in a B!

Good luck, Rhys. Have a fantastic trip! โค๏ธ

Turning Point ๐Ÿ”„๐Ÿ”ง

Sometimes the smallest engineering details make the biggest difference.

In this video, Chris and Ethan break out the spanners to demonstrate our Top Trunnion Needle Roller Bearing Upgrade โ€” a clever refinement designed to improve steering feel, reduce friction and enhance driver confidence.

Suitable for MGB and MGC, this precision-engineered upgrade replaces the original oilite bearings, which can wear over time, with a roller bearing assembly designed for smoother operation and improved longevity.

Manufactured in the UK using case-hardened steel cups, the bearings are encapsulated to provide protection against dirt ingress, helping maintain consistent performance over the long term.

The result? Smoother steering operation, reduced driver effort and improved turn-in when cornering โ€” a subtle chassis upgrade that helps your classic feel more responsive without changing its character. ๐Ÿ

Engineered for quality:
๐Ÿ”ง UK manufactured case-hardened steel cups
โš™๏ธ Precision roller bearing assembly for reduced friction
๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Protection against dirt ingress for improved durability
๐Ÿ“– Full fitting instructions available online

For owners looking to upgrade their existing kingpins, the kit is available as H002B.

Prefer a ready-to-fit solution? We also offer pre-built kingpin assemblies incorporating the needle roller bearing upgrade:

Cracking On... ๐Ÿ”ง

The original cast iron exhaust manifold fitted to MG Midget 1098 (Mk II) and 1275 (Mk III) models is now over 50 years old. Itโ€™s hardly surprising that, after decades of heat cycles, thermal fatigue is beginning to take its toll.

Fitted to over 110,000 MG Midget Mk II and Mk III models, the original 12G420 cast iron 'Bell Clamp' exhaust manifold, served the marque for nearly a decade.

Fitted to:
โœ… **MG Midget Mk II 1098** โ€“ GAN3-25788 to GAN3-52389
โœ… **MG Midget Mk III 1275** โ€“ GAN4-52390 to GAN5-139136

From GAN5-139137 (September 1973) onwards, the later flange-style exhaust manifold was introduced.

In this video, Chris discusses the original cast exhaust manifold, why this often-overlooked component becomes increasingly prone to cracking with age, and why MGOC Spares invested in new tooling to faithfully recreate it.

Manufactured to the original specification, our retooled cast iron manifold provides an affordable, dependable solution for owners restoring or maintaining standard MG Midgets fitted with the original bell-style exhaust connection. ๐Ÿ”ง

When original components reach the end of their service life, MGOC Spares is committed to ensuring the next generation of owners has the right parts available.
