October is Tyre Safety Month, and better tyre care starts with three simple checks.

Condition: look over each tyre for cuts, cracks, bulges or anything embedded in the rubber.

Tread: the legal minimum for cars in the UK is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre. Try the 20p test. If you can see the outer band of the coin when it's in the grooves, your tread could be close to the limit.

Pressure: check your tyres when they're cold and inflate them to the levels in your vehicle handbook or on the sticker inside the fuel flap or door frame. Don't forget the spare!

Doing these checks once a month, and before long journeys, helps keep you safe and can even improve your fuel economy.
