There's a certain kind of VW T6 owner who's done everything right with their conversion — quality fitout, pop-top roof, the lot — but the electrics are letting the side down.
That was exactly the situation here. The original lead-acid battery mounted under the seat had started overheating and simply couldn't keep up with demand anymore. Not ideal when you're trying to get away and actually use the thing.
We replaced the underseat battery with a Fogstar Drift 172Ah lithium — a significant step up in usable capacity, and no more heat concerns. The original 30A DC-DC charger was swapped out for a Victron Orion XS 50A, which means the lithium charges properly and efficiently from the engine while driving. We also fitted a new Victron SmartSolar MPPT controller and replaced a faulty flexible solar panel on the pop-top that wasn't performing as it should.
The result is a system that actually matches the quality of the rest of the build. Proper lithium power, a charger that can keep up with it, and solar that works.
As the mat in the back says — ...and Relax.
Based in Callander, Perthshire, we work on campervans and motorhomes right across Scotland. If your electrics aren't keeping up with your adventures, give us a shout.

Intermittent faults are some of the most frustrating things to deal with on a campervan — and one of the hardest to diagnose. This owner had been living with an unreliable Truma diesel heater for a long time without getting to the bottom of it. When the van came into us at Keltie Campers, we took the time to properly diagnose the fault and carry out a full repair. No guesswork, no parts-swapping hoping for the best — just methodical diagnosis and a fix that actually holds.

While the van was with us, we also completed a full habitation check. It's something we always recommend when a vehicle comes in for any significant work. A habitation check looks at everything from gas safety and ventilation through to the 12V and mains electrics — the kind of things that can go unnoticed until they become a problem on a trip. It's peace of mind that the whole van is in good order, not just the thing you brought it in for.

On top of that, we upgraded the battery setup with a Fogstar Drift 230Ah underseat lithium battery and a Victron 20A mains battery charger. The customer now has a properly sorted van — reliable heat, a healthy electrical system, and the confidence to head out without wondering what might let them down.

We're based in Callander, Perthshire — 45 minutes from both Edinburgh and Glasgow — and we work on campervans and motorhomes from across Scotland. If you've got an ongoing fault you can't get to the bottom of, or you're thinking about a battery upgrade, get in touch.

This bold yellow VW T6 campervan came to us this week after visiting two other garages — both of which sent the owner away saying the batteries were fine and it was safe to keep using hookup. They were not fine. The leisure batteries had deteriorated to a dangerous state. When attempting to take a charge — whether driving or on hookup — they were overheating and emitting poisonous gas directly into the living space of the van. That's not a minor fault. That's a serious safety risk. We diagnosed the issue immediately and replaced the failed batteries with a Fogstar Drift 105Ah lithium — a reliable, safe, properly specified unit for leisure use. The van is now charging correctly, performing as it should, and most importantly, safe to use. If your leisure batteries aren't charging properly, or you've been told "they're fine" but something still doesn't feel right — get a second opinion. This kind of fault isn't always obvious without the right diagnostic equipment and experience. We're based in Callander, Perthshire — 45 minutes from Edinburgh and Glasgow — and we work on campervans, motorhomes and leisure vehicles right across Scotland. Give us a call or drop us a message.

⚠️ This is something every campervan and motorhome owner needs to read.
Over the past few months we've seen a worrying number of customers coming to us with failing lead acid leisure batteries — and the stories are getting serious.
We've had customers with CO alarms going off repeatedly through the night. Some had silenced the alarms or removed them entirely, assuming they were faulty. They weren't. The battery was triggering them by gassing hydrogen sulphide — a colourless, toxic, and flammable gas — into the vehicle while they slept.
And last week we had a customer whose second leisure battery — strapped in behind the driver's seat next to the heating unit — exploded overnight on their driveway. The night before they were due to leave for their holiday. Sulphuric acid sprayed across the seats, the furniture, the interior. They were incredibly lucky it happened at home and not on a campsite with the family inside.
Lead acid batteries don't usually fail quietly. Here are the warning signs:
🔴 Battery warm or hot to the touch when not charging
🔴 Smell of rotten eggs (hydrogen sulphide — a serious warning sign)
🔴 CO alarm going off — especially at night
🔴 Battery not holding charge like it used to
🔴 Swollen or distorted battery casing
🔴 Corrosion around the terminals
If your CO alarm goes off and there's no obvious combustion source, check your battery before you do anything else. Don't silence the alarm. Ventilate the vehicle and investigate.
And please — never disconnect a battery that is fizzing or gassing. A single spark at the terminal can ignite the hydrogen. Open windows and doors, let it cool, then act carefully.
We've written a full guide on our website covering exactly what's happening chemically, why certain locations (near heaters, under seats) make it worse, and what to do. Link in the comments. 👇
If your battery is more than 3–4 years old, or you're not sure of its condition, get it checked. We're in Callander and cover customers across Scotland.
