🔧 WORKSHOP INSIGHT THURSDAY | Are your workshop processes working in practice?

Most workshops have processes in place. But how consistently are they being followed?

When things get busy, it's easy for small shortcuts to creep in. A check gets missed, a job isn't documented properly or someone assumes another member of the team has dealt with something.

Individually, these might seem minor. Over time, they can affect efficiency, quality and customer confidence.

A well-run workshop isn't necessarily one with the most procedures. It's one where everyone understands what's expected and those expectations are consistently met.

A few questions worth asking:
🔹 Are responsibilities clear across the team?
🔹 Are quality checks carried out consistently, even on busy days?
🔹 Do technicians know where to find the latest procedures and guidance?
🔹 When something goes wrong, is it used as an opportunity to improve?

🔧 TECH TIP TUESDAY | ADAS Calibration – Precision Matters!

Modern vehicles are packed with technology designed to keep drivers, passengers and other road users safe. But how do we make sure those systems are working as intended?

Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS), including lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control and autonomous emergency braking, rely on cameras, radar and sensors operating accurately.

Even a small misalignment can affect how these systems perform, which is why correct calibration is so important.

💡 Today's Tech Tip: ADAS calibration isn't simply about connecting diagnostic equipment. Technicians need to understand the difference between static and dynamic calibration, use the correct equipment and follow manufacturer specifications to ensure systems are calibrated accurately.

It was great to be involved in the IMI round table event with some fantastic input from Pro-Techs MD Amy-Jane Marsden. Let’s see what the future MOT holds it’s going to be interesting 🧐

Last week, the IMI, with the support of the DVSA, brought together 24 experts from across the automotive sector and beyond to discuss how the MOT can remain trusted, sustainable and fit for the future.

Chaired by the IMI’s CEO, Nick Connor, the roundtable examined some of the most pressing issues facing MOT services, including:

• EV-specific inspection requirements
• Investment in equipment and training
• Skills and workforce capability
• Emerging safety risks and fraud prevention
• Cost pressures for businesses and motorists

As the voice of the automotive workforce, the IMI is committed to bringing industry together to support sustainable, futureproof roadworthiness testing and protect road safety.

Some positive news for the automotive industry this week!

Laser Tools has announced the 50 apprentices selected for its Future50 initiative, following more than 200 nominations from garages across the UK.

The scheme recognises and supports young people building their careers in the automotive aftermarket, with 10 women among those selected.

It's fantastic to see initiatives like this shining a spotlight on the next generation of automotive professionals.

With vehicle technology continuing to evolve, attracting new talent is only part of the challenge. Giving technicians the skills, confidence and opportunities to develop throughout their careers is just as important.

When diagnosing faults in electric and hybrid vehicles, getting to the root of the problem is essential.

⚡ This week's tip: Don't rely on fault codes alone. Understanding how high-voltage systems work, interpreting manufacturer data and carrying out the correct diagnostic tests are key to identifying faults accurately.

📰 IN THE NEWS | New MOT Rules for LED Headlights

MOT testers – are you up to speed with the latest changes?

From 14 October 2026, the DVSA has updated its MOT inspection requirements to allow certain approved LED replacement bulbs in existing halogen headlamp units.

The changes apply to Class 3, 4, 5 and 7 vehicles, but there are important conditions.
🔧 The replacement bulbs must have the correct approval.
🔧 The headlamp unit must be compatible.
🔧 The required approval sticker must be present and meet the DVSA's requirements.

For MOT testers and garage owners, it's another reminder of why keeping up with DVSA updates matters.
