Let's talk speed.. πŸ’₯πŸš—πŸ’¨

"I was only slightly above the speed limit" is something that I hear quite a lot when talking with both learner drivers & full licence holders.

This video shows how small increases of speed can lead to dramatically increased percentages of kinetic energy, resulting in much higher levels of damage.

It's really important to be aware of other vehicle's blind spots and to ensure that you spend as little time as possible in these zones, especially when dealing with HGVs 🚚 πŸš›

It's impossible to completely avoid these areas at all times but if you do find yourself in someone's blind spot, move out from there as soon as its safe to do so πŸš—

πŸš— Prepare your vehicle to move - engine on, select 1st gear, set gas & find biting point

πŸ‘€ Observe all around - checking for any oncoming traffic or pedestrians that may be affected, don't forget blind spots! If you're going to affect anyone by moving off then give way. Signal before moving off if necessary.

πŸ’¨ Move off - release handbrake and steer away from kerb, control steering so you don't head into oncoming traffic.

New(ish) highway code rulesπŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡

Highway code for pedestrians:
Rule 8 - "When you are crossing or waiting to cross the road, other traffic should give way. Look out for traffic turning into the road, especially from behind you, and cross at a place where drivers can see you. If you have started crossing and traffic wants to turn into the road, you have priority and they should give way"

Highway code for drivers:
Rule H2 - "At a junction you should give way to pedestrians crossing or waiting to cross a road into which or from which you are turning."

Approaching this junction, we noticed the boy standing near the kerb and reduced speed for the turn, ready to give way. As we got closer we noticed the boy hadn't looked up and was showing no signs of crossing, he then unexpectedly stepped out into the road without looking just as we turned in. As we were prepared for this, we prevented this becoming a major issue.

This clip shows a situation that, unfortunately, is becoming almost a daily occurrence for driving instructors & learner drivers πŸ˜”

Here we were doing around 28mph on a 30mph road, a perfectly safe speed for the road & conditions whilst maintaining a safe distance from the cars ahead. The overtake was not only dangerous, it was completely unnecessary πŸ‘Ž

Some tips for overtaking other vehicles πŸ‘‡

✨ LADA - Look πŸ‘€ Assess πŸ€” Decide 🧠 Act βœ…
>LOOK at the situation ahead of you
>ASSESS what's ahead - consider speed limits, oncoming vehicles, hazards, necessity
>DECIDE when to overtake - considering the above factors
>ACT on your decision with everyones safety in mind
