What is a Winding Hole❓❓❓
A winding hole is a widened section of canal designed to allow boats to turn around where the canal itself is too narrow. Originally built for commercial carrying boats near wharves, they were sized to accommodate the largest boats using the waterway. Today, many winding holes have become less effective due to silting, vegetation, moored boats, or restricted access. While official winding holes still exist, boats can often also turn at wider sections of canal such as junctions and marina entrances (we have one of them! 😉)
How do you use them❓❓❓
A winding hole consists of a "notch" in the canal bank. A turning boater inserts the bow of the boat into the notch and swings the stern round.
Whats the boating etiquette❓❓❓
Good boating etiquette when using a winding hole involves planning ahead, signalling your intentions clearly, and minimising inconvenience to other boaters. Allow space for boats that may be turning, avoid passing a boat while it is manoeuvring unless invited to do so, and never moor in a way that obstructs access to a winding hole.
Whether youre new to boating or youve been at it years, Reedley Marina has everything you need and moor 😉
