It’s a beautiful day for… ! 🚘 📸

On their holidays, this family used the Standard Vanguard Phase II to tow their Raven Savoy caravan into the New Forest National Park.

After all (and perhaps we’re biased) there’s no better spot for camping and caravanning than the New Forest! 🌳

Did you know… the Vanguard was launched by the Standard Motor Company in 1947. It was an instant success in both the UK and Australia, and later in 1952, the Standard Vanguard Phase II was released with only a few stylistic changes.

The name of the Vanguard recalled the last of the British Navy’s battleships, the HMS Vanguard. ⚓️ The ship was launched in 1944. Standard Motor Company were forced to enter long negotiations with senior Royal Navy personnel to allow them use of the name.

On 25 August 12 years ago, at Edwards Air Force base in California, Charles Burnett III drove the British Steam Car ‘Inspiration’ to a new Land Speed Record for steam power, recording an average speed of 139.843mph. The next day Don Wales, grandson of Sir Malcolm Campbell, drove the car even faster, setting a kilometre record with an average speed of 148.166mph. Altogether the team claimed five international and American speed records.

The record that the team broke had been established at Daytona in 1906 when Fred Marriott drove the Stanley steam car ‘Rocket’ to a speed of 121.57mph. At the time this was the outright Land Speed Record and would stand for three years before it was broken by Victor Héméry at the wheel of a Benz. The record speed for a steam car remained unchallenged for 103 years.
You can see the car displayed at National Motor Museum, Beaulieu.

On this day 1967, Jim Clark drove the Lotus 49 to victory in the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, in a race largely dominated by Clark and his team mate Graham Hill. Hill led up to the 55th lap and was eventually forced to retire but Clark held on to win ahead of Denny Hulme’s Brabham. You can see Graham Hill’s car displayed at the National Motor Museum.
