We have rain up here. So while Mr Fuggle is shuffling stuff about to get the new Scottish HQ working, the test vehicle came out of the garage to release a bit of dry shuffling space and it went out for a bit of shrinkage! The new tilt has been dry since it was fitted but the back flap is a bit too low down as were the sides. After a bit of the wet stuff, the sides look much better so I hope the back will too and it’s very taught on the top.

Mr Fuggle decide to re-bush the distributor in his test bed because it was wobbly sideways and up and down!

In the process, he’s knackered it - has anyone got a Lucas DM2, number 40330D available? Preferably 54 dated but he can’t afford to be fussy, carbs await testing….

Mangled hand update:

Mr Fuggle's Ryobi Rash is now much less unsightly! A fist can be made now but the index and middle fingers still have no feeling on one of their sides. They're still swollen, mind, so there's hope!

The middle finger won't extend fully (to the relief of fellow road users!) but Mr Fuggle can't be sure whether that was because of a previous attempt to skin it by putting it between a hammer and wheelstuds of a Triumph Vitesse (twice!) 30 years ago or getting it trapped between a collapsing scissor jack and the chassis of the same Vitesse 35 years ago.

This isn't holding him back, though, three more Solex 32PBI-2s and a Solex B40 have been partially Fettled this week and another batch of 6 Zenith 36IVs await reassembly....

"Gettin' jiggy wid it!?"

Lots of Series 1 Land Rover Solex carbs come in with broken choke bodies. The cause is gorilla mechanics trying to undo the nut holding the lever on the spindle without supporting the lever. The spindle twists, the lever reaches its forward stop and snaps it off.
Mr Fuggle's usual technique for repair is to machine the base of the broken stop flush, centre-drill it and fit a replacement stop made from brass with an integral peg. It's brass because an aluminium one would last 5 minutes. Oh, and the brass comes from scrapped Lucas CW1 wiper motor spindles!

The trouble is, to hold it steady in the vice of the milling machine needed at least two sets of t-nut studs, milling machine wedges and steady bars screwed to the milling machine base to simply press the body down on to the vice and because it was just pressed down, there was always a danger of it slipping.

A brain-wave, use of a sketch from a previously drawn CAD file of the whole carburetter and a 3D printer resulted in a Fuggle's Fettling Machine-O-Matic.

Simply screw the broken choke body to the jig, making use of the integrated captive nuts added during the 3D printing process, clamp the jig in the vice and using the DRO on the milling machine, the broken nub is machined, centre-drilled and then fully drilled to suit the new brass peg. It can be used in a session and repair a load of them at once without re-setting the whole assembly. Simples.

So the 'Yard Art' was because Mr Fuggle needed to get his Botts out and polish them!
Bott workshop cupboards that is, which have been stored in the car garage since he moved in. The cars had to come out to get at them. The Land Rover and Sprite have been used recently so started up fine, the Mini needed the usual 'encouragement' of the fuel pump to get that going.
The cupboards, courtesy of Mr James Clough scrubbed up well and are all now in the new HQ awaiting for the doors to be fitted to the space and then arranged around the walls. The new HQ is coming on, with nice interlocking PVC floor, electrical power and a couple of frivolities thrown in for good measure.
Doors are to be fitted in the first week of August which should give time for the swelling to reduce in Mr Fuggle's hand (which is now much less unsightly) and the feeling to come back and for the big move of Mr Fuggle's carburetter stock to happen!

Well, a weeks' healing and Mr Fuggle stole himself to have a look at the damage.

I think if it had been any worse, it would have been amputation...

Anyway, the fettling must go on so Mr Fuggle Senior has been roped in to pack some finished carbs destined for Australia; strip the next batch of Zeniths; and assist in the overhaul of a Sunbeam Talbot Stromberg DI-36.

Senior also served as chauffeur to the "DnG torque and tea" meet while testing a carb - not something he enjoyed, too many levers which don't fall easily to hand for an 88 year-old!

Bu**er!

It’s D & G highways fault! Mr Fuggle was waiting for the electrician to wire up his new workshop when he found the road closed with a ridiculous detour so cried off. Instead Mr Fuggle and Mr Fuggle Senior decided to lay the new PVC floor tiles instead.

Some needed trimming, making the battery circular saw the perfect tool

Until it wasn’t.

Three fingers mangled, one down to tendons requiring an operation in the morning.

“We’ve got a spurter” was uttered while the fingers were being examined. Mr Fuggle wasn’t looking…. 🫣🤢
