26/03/2020

We have made the decision to temporarilyy close Hanham Garage from close of business on Wednesday 25th March 2020 due to the current situation with the COVID-19 outbreak.
We sent all staff home at the beginning of the week and I have been prioritising this week to ensure that key workers and those self-isolating would be able to get an MOT on their vehicle to keep them legal and mobile. DVLA have now extended MOT by six months for those that expire after 30th March 2020.
The Health and safety of our customers, our workforce and their families are paramount to us. Breaking the chain of contact by limiting movement and interaction with others, we will be ensuring that we are doing all that we can to help protect the NHS and save lives and defeat this dreadful pandemic.
We will be monitoring the situation and, following Government advice very closely. We plan to revaluate our position in three weeks' time.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our customers for all their help and support in these difficult and challenging times.
We hope to be able to resume normal service as soon as it is safe for all of us to do so. In the meantime, please stay safe and remember:

Stay at home
Only go outside for food, health reasons or work (but only if you cannot work from home)
Stay 2 metres (6ft) away from other people
Wash your hands as soon as you get home
You can spread the virus even if you donโ€™t have symptoms.
Staying at home and away from others (social distancing)
protects the NHS and Save lives

Look forward to seeing you all again very soon.

COVID-19 Hanham Garage We are here to help

19/03/2020

As businesses across the UK make adjustments to mitigate the impact of COVID-19, we want to reassure you that Hanham Garage is actively monitoring the situation on an ongoing basis and are taking steps so that we may continue to safely supply our customers with a first class service.

The situation is changing day-by-day, and we are rigorously following the government guidance as it is released. One of the ways identified to reduce the risk to both our staff and our customers is by putting some social distancing processes in place. This will have minimal impact on your interactions with us.

Here are some of the steps we are taking to reduce the risk:
ยท We are instructing all customer facing people to try wherever possible to maintain a reasonable distance (approximately 1 metre) from other people on-site and refrain from shaking hands.
ยท Our customer facing people have been advised to use antibacterial wipes on the collection and return of vehicle keys Vehicle technicians have been instructed to use disposal gloves at all times .To use antibacterial wipes on steering wheels, handbrake, door handles and any other controls that have been touched before commencing any work and also after completion of works
ยท Our customer facing people have been advised to use disposal gloves, hand sanitiser and antibacterial wipes so that they can maintain high standards of hygiene.
ยท Any Hanham Garage employee who are feeling unwell are required to self-isolate and remain at home for 14 days as per the government guidelines.

Please rest assured that we are constantly reviewing the situation and have continuity plans in place. We will update you if our approach changes, but please feel free to contact us on if you 0117 9677641 if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind regards,
Hanham Garage

Brakes are one of the most important safety components of a vehicle:
Regularly checking of brakes is important, avoiding more serious and costly problems and the risk of sudden brake failure.

Free Brake Checks
If you are ever in any doubt about the state of your brakes, we provide a no-obligation free brake check

Our free comprehensive brake check will take around 45 minutes to complete . It begins with a preliminary road test to check the braking system followed by a series of inspections in the following key areas:

Brake Pedal - We will check the pedal travel and servo operation during a static test.

Pads & Shoes - We will measure the pads or shoes for wear and also check for damage.

Wheel Cylinder - We will examine the cylinder assembly and master cylinder for damage or fluid leaks.

Disc Brake Calipers - We will examine the calipers, hoses and pipes, checking for damage or fluid leaks around each brake unit..

Handbrake - We will report the condition and operation of the handbrake.

Brake Fluid - We will check the quality of the brake fluid to ensure it still lubricates effectively and has not taken in a high level of moisture.

Final Road Test - to check the braking system is working effectively.

As you may or may not be aware the MOT test is changing on the 20th May 2018 . If you are not sure how these changes may effect you please feel free to give us a call or drop in for a friendly chat .

The main changes to be aware of -

Advisories are being replaced with minor fails. You will still get a pass but they will be noted on your test certificate. These are pre written and approved by the DVSA.

Those of you who have changed your standard headlight bulbs for HID's will now get a major fail even if the aim is correct. It has always been an offence to fit HID bulbs to halogen headlamps so the MOT is now in line with that.

Reverse lights are now part of the MOT for any car registered from 1st September 2009 (59 plate onwards). Daytime running lamps (DRL's) & front fog lamps must work on vehicles registered from March 2018 (18 plate onwards).

Engine Management Light is now a major fail. It must come on with the ignition and then turn off when the engine is started.

Brake pad warning lights are a major fail.

Handbrake with excessive travel is now a major fail. Before it would only a fail if there was no reserve travel.

Contaminated (dirty) brake fluid is a major fail.

Oil leaks (engine, gearbox etc) can be a major fail.

A vehicle fitted with a DPF that emits any kind of visible smoke during the metered test will now fail.

Emissions limits for diesels registered on or after 1st of January 2014 have been reduced. All diesels will now need to pass the limit that was set by the manufacturer when the car was new. This can be found on the VIN plate. For example the current limit for your diesel car may be 1.50. That could change to as low as 0.30 with the new rules.

The MOT test will change on 20 May 2018, with new defect types, stricter rules for diesel car emissions, and some vehicles over 40 years old becoming exempt.
