Maria (said as Mariah) CK21 was recently up in our hoist for relaunch after a hull wash.

Built in 1866 by Harris Brothers at Donyland (now Rowhedge), Maria is a 47ft Colchester smack, and one of the oldest still afloat. She was built for a Mr Dunn of Wivenhoe and spent her working life oyster dredging and fishing the east coast.

Harris Brothers were better known for yacht building than smacks, and it shows: Maria is narrower and finer in the hull than the beamier smacks that came later, which gave those boats more stability in rough weather. What Maria lacked in beam she made up for in speed. She was regularly raced through the winter months, often by owners who also skippered the big racing yachts of the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, and she had a real reputation for being quick.

160 years old this year, and still coming in. Not bad going.
