Where It All Began… 🌿🚐💙
Every rolling home has a story, and before you see where Juno ended up, I thought it would be nice to take you right back to the very beginning.
This is how she arrived after I found her, bought her and brought her back to SupertrampedHQ. A humble 1986 Mercedes 508D, showing just 80,000 miles, with a naturally aspirated 4.0-litre OM314 diesel engine, 4-speed manual gearbox, rear-wheel drive, a 7-metre XLWB body and a GVW of 5,200kg. An ex-Snap-on vehicle that had spent its life dry stored, giving us an incredibly honest and well preserved foundation to build upon.
By today’s standards, the specifications seem almost laughably simple, and that’s exactly why these old Mercedes trucks have earned such a legendary reputation. No ECUs, no diagnostics, no emissions equipment, no ad blue, no turbocharger and very little to go wrong. Just a beautifully over engineered mechanical diesel engine that will happily run for hundreds of thousands of miles with little more than regular servicing and a bit of mechanical sympathy. The OM314 has long been affectionately known as the “million-mile engine” amongst enthusiasts. Not because every engine reaches a million miles untouched, but because they’re renowned for covering extraordinary mileages before ever needing a major overhaul.
Being over 40 years old, Juno is now historic vehicle tax exempt. She could also qualify for MOT exemption based on her age, but because she’s registered in a heavier goods vehicle weight class, she still requires an annual MOT, which I actually think is a good thing. It means she’s professionally inspected every year, helping to keep a vehicle of this size safe for many years to come.
Over the coming days, I’ll be taking you back through Juno’s journey, sharing some of the key stages that transformed this honest old workhorse into the rolling home she is today.
If you’d like to follow the journey, I’d really appreciate your support. Every single day I open social media, I seem to come across another handful of posts from small businesses announcing they’re closing their doors. It’s genuinely heartbreaking to see. Social media has changed enormously over the years, and businesses, both big and small, are finding it harder than ever to reach the very people who chose to follow them in the first place.
If you’re excited to follow Juno’s journey, leave the word “JUNO” in the comments, or simply drop a 💙 below to help keep the cogs turning. Every single comment, reaction and share helps these posts reach more people and gives small independent businesses like Supertramped a fighting chance.
With Love,
Ashley Webber
