Passing the driving test is a brilliant achievement, but the real goal is being able to drive confidently and safely when your instructor isn't sitting beside you anymore.

That's why I don't teach people simply to memorise test routes or just “get through” the test.

I want my pupils to understand what they're doing and be able to make good decisions independently.

The test is the milestone. Becoming a safe driver is the goal.

A good driving lesson shouldn't just be about getting through the test as quickly as possible.

It's about understanding what you're doing, becoming confident making decisions for yourself and learning skills you'll still be using years after you've passed.

That's always my aim with RoadSpence - relaxed, structured lessons that progress at the right pace for each learner.

Your first driving lesson isn't a test.

I'm not expecting you to know how to move the car, use the clutch properly or understand every road situation.

That's literally why I'm there.

We'll go through things at your pace, explain what everything does and gradually start putting it into practice.

If you've been putting off that first lesson because you're worried about what to expect, there's really no need to.

There's much more to teaching someone to drive than telling them when to change gear.

Over the years I've taught complete beginners, nervous learners, people returning to lessons after a long break and pupils preparing for their test.

Everyone learns differently, and being able to recognise that and adapt the lesson is a huge part of being an instructor.

That's the approach I bring to every RoadSpence lesson.

Learner drivers - what part of learning to drive did you find the hardest?

Roundabouts? Manoeuvres? Hill starts? Judging gaps? Or just getting over the nerves of those first few lessons?

I'm curious to see which one comes up most. Comment below!

You'll potentially spend dozens of hours learning with your driving instructor, so choosing the right one matters.

You should feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and saying when you don't understand something.

My lessons are always one-to-one, patient and tailored to the person sitting beside me — because everybody learns differently.

Stalled the car? Wrong gear? Missed an exit? Forgot the indicator?

Good.

You're learning.

Driving lessons aren't about proving how good you already are. They're somewhere you can make mistakes safely, understand what happened and learn how to deal with it next time.

Nobody gets behind the wheel for their first lesson knowing how to drive.

Nervous about learning to drive?

Feeling nervous before a driving lesson is completely normal - especially if it's your first one.

You don't need to know anything before you get in the car. You don't need to worry about making mistakes. And you're certainly not expected to be good at something you're only just learning.

I've taught plenty of nervous learners over the years, and one of the best parts of the job is watching that nervousness gradually turn into confidence.

If nerves have been putting you off starting, you're always welcome to have a chat with me first.

Learning to drive with family to keep costs down?

Private practice can be a brilliant way to build experience without paying for every hour behind the wheel.

As your test gets closer, a few professional lessons can help spot any habits or gaps, work on the areas that need attention and make sure you're driving independently to test standard.

5-hour Test Prep Package — £180

Includes an initial assessment, focused tuition and mock-test preparation.

A quick update on lesson prices.

I’ve tried to keep my prices at £35 an hour for as long as possible, but with the continued increase in fuel and running costs, unfortunately it’s reached the point where I need to make a small change.

From today, lessons will be £38 per hour.

This isn’t a decision I’ve taken lightly, and I’ve held off increasing prices for as long as I realistically could. I want to continue giving every learner the same amount of time, patience and quality of tuition without cutting corners elsewhere.

Thank you to everyone who continues to support RoadSpence — it really is appreciated.
