BMW B37 B47 B57 Intake System Problems We’re Seeing All Too Often 👀

On B37 B47 B57 engines, we’re seeing some of the worst intake contamination imaginable.

The combination of EGR gases and crankcase ventilation can create a heavy build-up of carbon and oil deposits throughout the intake system. Over time, this can restrict the intake channels and prevent the swirl flaps from operating correctly.

The worst-affected vehicles tend to be the transversely mounted applications, including models such as the BMW Active Tourer and X1.

It’s not just the transverse mounted engines!

Longitudinally mounted B37 B47 B57 applications can suffer from the same intake contamination, EGR and swirl flap issues too. No B37/B47/B57 application should be considered completely immune.

Our approach can include:

✅ Walnut blasting to restore the intake system
✅ EGR solutions to help prevent ongoing issues
✅ Swirl flap solutions where required
✅ Replacement intake manifolds
✅ Stage 1 remapping to maximise the benefits

In some cases, the intake manifold may be beyond saving and require replacement. However, even where a new intake is needed, a suitable swirl flap solution can still be carried out.

Couple this with a Stage 1 remap from GKR Performance, and you can restore airflow, improve throttle response and potentially improve fuel efficiency, all while focusing on reliability and drivability.

We work closely with GKR Performance, combining their tuning expertise with our mechanical knowledge to deliver the best possible results for your BMW or MINI.

The owner of this bmw just pulled up at the workshop and booked in a ton of work, no questions, no bartering, just do what it needs I’ve heard good things.

Month later the car was with us a for the work, a noisy timing chain, oil leak and driving terrible due to worn out suspension.

Parts replaced:

Timing chain set up
Rocker cover
Coolant fl**ge (due to high failure rate)
Crankcase breather pipe
Rear main seal
Front shock absorbers / gaiters / bump stops
Front top mounts
Rear shock absorbers /gaiters / bump stops
Front centre control arms
Brake reaction control arms

Customer is over the moon, drives spot on, no oil or coolant leaks, engine is quiet again.

What a cool guy and so easy to deal with 👌🏻

Customer opted for our premium service, our Dynamic ZF8 gearbox service was carried out ensuring the gearbox continues its smooth gear changes and improving longevity.

Intermediate Oil service carried out on the Twin Turbo N57 engine plus a brake fluid service.

Digital online service records updated and I drive updated accordingly via our AOS portal.

This BMW 520d came to us with two complaints:

❌ Poor starting
❌ Reduced MPG

After diagnosing the vehicle, we confirmed exactly what we suspected.

What we found:

• Swirl flaps stuck closed
• Intake ports over 50% restricted
• Charge pressure sensor heavily blocked
• EGR mixing tube restricted with carbon

With the swirl flap motor no longer able to operate the flaps correctly, the engine simply wasn’t breathing as it should.

The repair:

✔️ New intake manifold fitted
✔️ Intake ports professionally walnut blasted using BMW specialist equipment and genuine BMW walnut media
✔️ Charge pressure sensor cleaned and unblocked
✔️ EGR mixing tube cleaned
✔️ Reassembled with care
✔️ Adaptations and injection values reset

The results?

✅ Starts first crank of the engine
✅ Noticeably smoother and quieter engine
✅ Restored low-end torque
✅ Sharper throttle response
✅ Improved fuel economy
✅ Another happy customer!

Carbon build-up is a common issue on BMW diesel engines as they approach the 100,000 mile mark. If your BMW isn’t performing like it used to, it may simply need some intake system maintenance to keep it running strong for the next 100,000 miles.
