BMW VIBRATIONS AND SUSPENSION NOISES - WHY THEY CAN BE SO DIFFICULT TO DIAGNOSE
We wanted to explain something that comes up regularly in the workshop.
BMWs with a vibration that occurs under speed or load, but not under braking.
These can be some of the most difficult faults to diagnose.
A vibration can have a number of possible causes and sometimes more than one issue can be contributing. Drivetrain components, propshafts, driveshafts, differentials, bushes, mounts, wheels, tyres and other components can all potentially play a part. The difficult bit is that a component can appear perfectly acceptable during a visual inspection or basic checks and still behave differently when the car is actually under load and at speed.
Quite often, the cars we see with these problems have already been to one or sometimes several other garages. By the time they reach us, a lot of the obvious possibilities have already been checked or replaced, which can make the diagnosis even more challenging.
We can spend hours testing, inspecting, road testing and eliminating possibilities, and sometimes we still cannot say with 100% certainty, “This is definitely the exact component causing your vibration.”
The biggest issue if customers give us one hour to find the issue, and that’s just never going to happen.
And this is where we want to be completely transparent with our customers.
If we cannot conclusively identify the fault, we will tell you. We won’t simply replace parts and pretend we know for certain what the outcome will be.
Instead, we may be able to say:
“This is what we believe is most likely.”
“These components are showing signs that make them worth investigating.”
“The next step we’d recommend is trying/replacing this component.”
“We can’t guarantee this will cure the vibration, but based on our testing, this is the next logical step.”
That diagnosis and investigation is still skilled workshop time, and it isn’t free!
Just because we haven’t been able to give a definitive answer doesn’t mean no work has been carried out. The time spent inspecting, testing, road testing, researching, eliminating possibilities and using our experience to narrow the fault down is exactly what you’re paying for.
We would much rather be honest and say “we don’t know for certain, but this is what we think and this is why” than charge a customer for a part that may not solve the problem simply because we want to give them an answer.
unfortunately, there isn’t a magic diagnostic machine that tells us exactly which component is responsible and you will never find a garage who can fix these vibrations without spending a fair chunk of money.
Diagnosis is a process of elimination and on some BMWs, that process can take considerable time.
We will always do our best to find the answer, keep you informed, and give you our honest professional opinion. But we also need customers to understand that our time, knowledge, testing and experience have value, even when there is no conclusive final answer.
We always suggest at an inspection at a main dealer for their opinion on vibrations first and you’ll soon see that even they don’t know, they will just suggest things to try just like us.
