πͺ΅ BUILDERS: GOT OLD OAK BEAMS COVERED IN THICK BLACK TAR? DONβT REACH FOR THE SANDER JUST YET.
This is exactly the kind of challenge specialist laser cleaning is designed to tackle. π
On this project, Lightwork Surface Solutions Ltd was tasked with removing heavily ingrained, black tar contamination from fragile oak beams across multiple levels of a property.
The challenge? This wasnβt a thin layer of old paint.
π οΈ The job at a glance:
* πͺ΅ Multiple oak beams across three upper-level beams and several ground-floor beams.
* β« Black tar contamination reaching approximately 1.5mm thick in places.
* β οΈ Fragile, deteriorating oak that was already crumbling in areas.
* π₯ Tar that became highly flammable during laser removal, requiring careful control and fire-risk management.
How did we approach it?
We operated at 50% power, using low frequencies, high scan speeds and continuously varied scan patterns to manage heat input and minimise the risk of scorching or burning the timber.
This wasnβt a job to rush. The contamination was exceptionally thick, and the condition of the oak demanded a controlled, methodical approach.
β±οΈ Total working time: 4 days.
Why does this matter to builders?
When renovating older properties, you can encounter timber hidden beneath decades of coatings, tar and other contamination. Aggressive sanding or conventional removal methods may remove valuable timber along with the material you actually want gone.
Laser cleaning offers another option for carefully removing unwanted surface contamination while aiming to preserve the original timber and its character.
Every substrate is different, and fragile timber requires assessment and test patches before proceeding.
