At Side Rock Cycles we specialize in building minimalist custom motorcycles. Cafe Racers, Scramblers, Trackers, Brats whatever you want! Side Rock Cycles is headed up in Bournemouth by Pete Hodson. Most of Pete’s working life has been in the bike trade including working for the local Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha and Triumph main dealers and for Sammy Miller. His lifelong riding passion began when he firs

t slung his leg over his 1973 Garelli Rekord. Since then his eclectic list of bikes owned and tinkered is immense. Highlights include Suzuki T500s, Suzuki X7s, Yamaha RD 250/400s and LC 350s. Then along came CBX1000, Dresda T500, an ape bared and tasseled Tiger 110! and more recently several Mille and Tuono Aprillias as well as various BMW GS models. Pete started racing in 1977 and raced until 1985. He won a few club championships and had podium finishes in the Formula 1 Nationals aboard his factory sponsored Rickman Yoshimura GS1000. Although no longer racing he is never happier than when riding fast and can often be found at track days around the UK. Cadwell and Oulton Park being his current two favorite tracks. Pete will be delighted to hear from you to discuss ideas for next build.

Among the many jobs and upgrades to this R65 is to refresh the cylinder heads . High mileage 45/65's have a nasty habit of valves breaking with potentially disastrous consequenses . Some of it is due to the motors revvy nature as it's a short stroke engine unlike the long stroke 60/75/80/100's
As we're also fitting a Siebenrock 860cc power kit and bigger carbs which will make around 30% more power and torque it's a no brainer. New valves, guides, springs, collets and re-cut seats will do the job nicely.

Doing some work on this BM R65 cafe racer that was put together a while back as a Knight Rider tribute bike with lots of flashing lights and even speaking modes . The new owner has got rid of all that stuff and now wants it in a scrambler style with a military theme .
First job is to modify the subframe with a rear loop so the new seat pan can sit on it

My neighbour is selling his 1983 BMW R80 RT (minus fairing ) which we supplied , serviced and maintained during his ownership. It runs and rides really well, starts on the button and is mechanically quiet. Recent work includes powder coated wheels in satin black with new Avon Roadrider tyres, fully adjustable YSS shocks ,new chrome crash bars, GM battery and service . It also has a full stainless Keihin exhaust system and comes with the owners manual and workshop manual .
As it's over 40 yrs old it is historic registered so no tax or mot required. The paintwork looks original , a bit faded and there's a few marks but generally it's pretty good. It's showing 56k on the speedo which is believed correct but can't guarantee it . The substantial framed cover will be included in sale if wanted. He's looking for £2950 but will haggle . Based in Bournemouth U.K.
If anyone is interested let me know and I will pass on his details

Really enjoyed our Bournemouth and Poole DGR that I did with my pals Terry , Craig and 1100 other bikers. Think it was the second biggest in the world and one of the best fundraisers . Well done to the organisers , who are all volunteers ,for planning a great route and stop over places . It was amazing to see so many people lining the route , cheering and waving . The best one yet and even the weather played ball.

Just an update on our finished BMW R100R project "PMW PH1000R" for those of you who were curious ( like us ) on how it performed with the FCR 37 flatslides . Considering they were bolted on straight out of the box with no jet changes , they are brilliant . Instant start up with the pull out chokes when cold and after five to ten seconds they're off and settles down to an even tickover . Pulling away is effortless with no bogging down and when warm it ticks over at traffic lights / junctions perfectly.
Acceleration is REALLY crisp all the way through the rev range and picks up much quicker than the 40mm Bings . Even in top gear at really low revs it'll pull strongly with no hesitation. It feels like its got a quick action throttle which it hasn't , just a regular twin pull Tomasselli as fitted standard on a lot of older Guzzi's. Checked the plug colour and they're a nice biscuity brown .
It's a big thumbs up from us

"PMW PH1000R" is done and ready for its first shakedown run. Finished in the corporate colours of our client Precision Hydration, we really like it and is something a bit different. Already impressed with the FCR flatslide carbs which we've used on some of our Guzzi builds with great results but not on any BM builds 'till now. As this is a street scrambler we wanted strong low down and midrange power , exactly where this bike will be used on most of it's rides , so we went for the 37's as we're not chasing top end power.
Well on first start up it fired instantly and picked up really cleanly then settled on a nice even tickover when warmed up . Even though they come with a selection of pilot and main jets we've not touched them , just bolted them on straight out the box . Impressed . Now let's see how they work out on the open road.

PMW PH1000R

Collected all the 'tins' for our latest BM street scrambler build from our go to paint guys Wicked Coatings and what a fab job ( as always ) they've done .
Finished in the corporate colours of our client Precision Hydration, they're gonna look great when all fitted .

Just finished buttoning up all the mods and upgrades on the RE Himalayan . A complete colour change to 'Desert Sand' which is an official military colour , I think , really suits this bike and along with new brown leather upholstery just finishes it off .
Renthal bars , Motogadget LED indicators, bar end mirrors and a trick LED headlamp by JB Speaker are all fitted . The complete exhaust system has been treated to a black Ceracoat finish and the crashbars blasted and powder coated satin black .
Looking good.

Something a bit different ! Been doing a bit of fettling on this 1967 Velo Solex getting it running and usable for the upcoming 'Poochie Ryders' charity ride in aid of the Staffie and Stray Rescue Volunteer Group on the 16th-18th August starting at The Bike Shed , Shoreditch London and finishing at Sammy Miller Motorcycle Museum culminating with a party at SBomb in Poole to celebrate.
There's going to be 5 of these little beauts on the ride and my role is to follow on behind in the back up van with tools and spares and hopefully keep them all going .
What could possibly go wrong !
