The maintenance gap is showing up at the roadside. Trailers now cause 48% of all tyre issues nationally, with nearly as many trailer tyre failures (755) as caravan and horsebox failures combined (836).

By contrast, caravan owners have reduced tyre failures by 6% since 2022, and in 2025 tyre issues accounted for 27% of total tyre breakdowns.

For working and utility trailers in particular, roadworthiness needs the same attention as the vehicle doing the towing. Before setting off, check tyre pressure, condition and tread.

If the trailer is working, its tyres need to be ready for work too.
