🔧 Hartech FAQs – Our Most Frequently Asked Questions
We see the same questions coming up time and time again across Porsche forums and social media (including our own page), so we thought we’d answer the most common ones in one place for everyone to refer back to.
📞 How do I book in?
Call the workshop on 01204 302809 and ask for Grant or Cam.
Or email [email protected]
💷 How much does a Hartech engine build cost?
Most of our base prices are listed on our website: www.hartech.org. These represent the minimum you can expect to pay for a Hartech engine build. Please call or email to discuss capacity conversions.
We also offer package pricing for:
* Block-only work
* Engine-only builds
What does a build cost on average?
This is probably the question we’re asked the most.
The honest answer is that every engine is assessed individually. No two builds are ever exactly the same.
Following inspection, we categorise any additional work into:
Essential – Items that must be repaired or replaced before the engine can be rebuilt, such as failed AOS units, snapped bolts, leaking coolant pipes, damaged components, etc.
Strongly Recommended – Work we’d advise carrying out while the engine is apart to improve reliability and longevity.
Light Recommendations – items we’ve noticed but aren’t cause for concern.
There is never any pressure or upselling from us. We simply provide honest advice, allowing you to make an informed decision.
📸 How much did the builds you feature on social media cost?
We generally don’t disclose individual customers’ invoices.
This isn’t about being secretive, it’s about respecting our customers’ privacy. Many of them follow our page, and we don’t feel it’s appropriate to publish what they’ve spent.
Of course, customers are more than welcome to share their own experiences if they wish.
📄 Can you provide information about a previous Hartech build on a car I’m buying or interested in purchasing?
The answer is sometimes.
If you’re purchasing the car directly from the customer who commissioned the Hartech build during their ownership, we’ll usually require their written permission before releasing any information about the work carried out.
However, if you’re not buying the vehicle from the customer who paid for the build, our company policy is not to disclose any information.
This isn’t because we’re trying to be difficult or secretive. Many Hartech-built cars change hands multiple times, and we often receive numerous enquiries about the same vehicle from prospective buyers. Unfortunately, we simply don’t have the time or resources to respond to every request.
We also believe it’s important to respect the privacy of the customers who entrusted us with their vehicle and paid for the work.
If you’re buying a Hartech-built Porsche, we’d always recommend asking the seller to provide any invoices or documentation they hold relating to the build.
🏁 How much power do your capacity conversions make?
Another question we get asked regularly.
Our focus has always been on increasing torque and improving drivability, rather than chasing peak horsepower figures.
As torque increases, horsepower naturally follows.
Every engine performs slightly differently on the dyno, even with identical specifications, which is why we don’t publish expected power figures. Setting specific expectations can be misleading, but customers are always welcome to share their own dyno results if they choose.
⚙️ What capacity conversions are available?
We currently offer the following conversions:
* 997 3.6 → 3.9 or 4.1
* 997 3.8 → 4.1
* 996 (Early) 3.4 → 3.7
* 996 (Late) 3.6 → 3.9 or 4.1
* Cayman S 3.4 → 3.9
* Boxster 3.2 → 3.7
If you’re unsure what engine your Porsche has, or which conversion is available for your model, just ask, we’ll be happy to help.
🚚 Can you arrange vehicle collection?
Yes.
We work with a trusted logistics partner who can collect and return vehicles throughout the UK. Collection and re-delivery costs are quoted at the point of enquiry or booking.
For customers sending engines or blocks only, we can also arrange collection and re-delivery via our trusted shipping partners.
🔩 Do you supply parts only?
Only Hartech manufactured parts.
IMS flanges
Racing Sumps
Vario cam seal kits
🧰 Can I supply my own parts?
In some instances, yes, but the best option is to ask at the point of enquiry or booking.
🛍️ Can you supply Hartech merchandise?
Yes.
We can supply Hartech stickers free of charge, Hartech decals (a direct replacement for the Carrera badge), and our popular 997 air box strip can be supplied at additional cost.
💳 Do I have to pay a deposit?
No, not initially.
Once we’ve assessed the engine and you’ve approved the work, we’ll ask for a stage payment, usually around half of the total build cost.
📖 What’s the running-in procedure?
Our full running-in procedure is available on www.hartech.org.
We do run through this procedure upon completion.
We strongly recommend following it carefully after every rebuild.
☎️ Can I call or email for advice?
Absolutely.
We have an experienced team who are always happy to answer questions and provide advice to the best of their knowledge.
Shall I ring every few weeks for updates?
Generally, this isn’t necessary.
We’re a very busy workshop with over 25–30 jobs on the go at any one time, so providing regular progress updates to every customer simply isn’t practical.
Rest assured, we’ll always contact you when there’s meaningful progress or if we need to discuss anything with you.
⏱️ How long does a build take?
Lead times vary depending on what’s being sent to us.
Complete vehicle & engine
* Around 3 months before we can accept the vehicle.
* Build time is then typically 10–12 weeks.
Engine only
* Approximately 6–8 weeks.
Block only
* Approximately 3–6 weeks.
Please note these times can vary depending on workload, staff holidays and unforeseen operational requirements.
🚗 Can I drop my car off early?
Usually, no.
Due to limited workshop space, we ask customers to bring their vehicle on, or very close to their allocated booking date.
If you have any other questions that aren’t covered in the FAQ’s then feelfree to send us an email or give us a call. 😃
