This is what can happen inside your engine's intake system over time. Heavy soot and carbon deposits can restrict airflow, affecting how efficiently your engine operates.

🔧 What causes soot build-up?

On diesel engines, one of the main causes is the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system. Exhaust gases are fed back into the intake to help reduce harmful emissions.

Over time, soot from these gases can mix with oil vapour from the crankcase ventilation system, creating thick, sticky carbon deposits.

Other contributing factors can include:

❌ Frequent short journeys and stop-start driving.

❌ Excessive oil vapour entering the intake system.

❌ Faulty EGR components or poor combustion.

❌ Underlying engine faults causing excessive soot production.

🔧 The Rise of the Google & ChatGPT Mechanic… 😬

We’re seeing more and more vehicles arriving at the workshop after someone has had a go themselves following advice from Google, YouTube, ChatGPT or an online forum.

We completely understand why. Costs are rising, times are hard, and when you find a step-by-step guide telling you exactly what to replace, reset or unplug, it’s very easy to think:

“I’ve got this!”

Unfortunately, quite often… you haven’t.

Modern vehicles are incredibly complex. One fault can produce exactly the same symptoms as something completely different. A fault code or symptom is usually a starting point for diagnosis — it isn’t necessarily an instruction to replace a particular component.

And this is where a cheap DIY repair can become an expensive one.

🔧 Parts get replaced unnecessarily.
⚡ Wiring, connectors or components can get damaged.
💻 Modules can be incorrectly programmed or configured.
❌ Original faults can be masked or additional faults introduced.

By the time the vehicle reaches us, our technician may have to spend hours working out what has been altered or damaged and putting it back to how it should be before we can even begin diagnosing the original problem.

That means more labour, more expense for you and more workshop time than the original fault may ever have required.

There’s another side to it too.

We carefully plan our workshop loading so we can keep vehicles moving efficiently and keep the promises we make to our customers. A job booked in for diagnosis that unexpectedly turns into “diagnose the original fault AND repair everything that's been disturbed along the way” can throw the entire day's schedule out.

We absolutely understand wanting to save money. But sometimes the cheapest option really is:

Use Google, YouTube and ChatGPT to understand your vehicle — they're brilliant resources. Just don't confuse information with diagnosis.

Sometimes knowing when to hand the job to someone with the correct training, equipment and experience can save you a lot of money in the long run.

🚗 WE’RE HIRING – SERVICE RECEPTION | AUTOWERKS, BOLTON

Monday–Friday | 8:30am–5:00pm | 30-minute lunch

We’re looking for a friendly, organised and professional person to join our team in a Service Reception role.

Main duties include:
• Taking telephone enquiries & workshop bookings
• Managing the workshop diary
• Welcoming customers & vehicle handovers
• Keeping customers updated
• Preparing quotes & invoices
• Ordering parts & loading purchases
• Supplier payments & filing
• Following up customers by email
• Identifying and offering relevant additional work
• Assisting with social media content

Previous motor trade/service reception experience is preferred but not essential – full training will be provided.

You’ll need to be confident dealing with customers face-to-face and over the phone, professional, organised, comfortable with computers and a good team player.

Autowerks is a busy, family-run independent garage specialising in German vehicles, diagnostics, servicing, repairs and EV/Hybrid work.

Salary dependent on experience.
