Happy 95th anniversary 🥳 🎉 🎈

Would you believe it's been 95 years since the first edition of the Highway Code was published on 14th April 1931? With only 18 pages, and just 10 road signs! It's older than the driving test itself 😮

Whilst there have been many changes made to it over the years, it's easy to keep up with those changes, either by downloading the app, or by keeping an updated copy of the book.

Here are all the dates of the changes to the rules regarding booking and changing your driving test in 2026.

Need to reschedule your test? DVSA have now published the test centre groupings if you need to move your test to another centre. For Bolton, you can move it to Bury, Atherton or Cheetham Hill and will take effect from 9th June 2026.
From 31st March 2026 you will only be able to change your test a maximum of 2 times.

Illegal instruction by individuals posing as driving instructors is on the rise again in Bolton. I saw 3 illegal instructors yesterday, 2 within the space of half an hour 🙄
Your driving instructor MUST display their badge in the window of their car when delivering a lesson that has been paid for. Illegal instructors are not vetted, and likely to be uninsured in the event of an incident.
Don't take the risk. If your instructor cannot show you their badge, don't get in the car.

Is your driving instructor legal? 🚗

It's illegal in the UK to charge for driving lessons unless the instructor is either an approved driving instructor (ADI) or a trainee potential driving instructor (PDI). Instructors who do not meet these qualifications and charge for lessons are breaking the law, and are unlikely to have the required insurance, which will leave you unprotected in the event of a collision ⛔️

The DVSA ensures that all approved and trainee instructors adhere to strict safety standards. This includes an enhanced DBS check and ongoing assessments to ensure that they remain a fit and proper person to teach ✅️

Your instructor should display their badge in the windscreen at all times when charging for lessons. If this is not displayed, then you should ask to see it. The badge will have their photo, reference number and expiry date. If you suspect that your instructor is teaching illegally then you can report this to the DVSA who will take this very seriously and investigate 🚦

Illegal instructors will often charge less than the going rate in your area, so if it seems too good to be true, it probably is ❌️

Learning to drive is expensive, and understandably people want to find the best deal. However the only way to know you are protected by the law, are protected by insurance, are safe to spend time in an enclosed environment with someone who has had an extensive background check and receive quality teaching, is to have your lessons delivered by a fully approved instructor, or a trainee instructor displaying the relevant badge 🛑

Is it really worth the risk to save a few £££'s? 👎
