Learners sometimes try to find an instructor just days before their test — but here are a few honest reasons why most instructors will politely decline 👇

1️⃣ Existing pupils come first 👩‍🎓
Instructors are usually fully booked with their own learners, who have invested time and money preparing for their test. Rearranging their lessons to accommodate someone at short notice wouldn’t be fair to them.

2️⃣ We don’t know your driving standard ❓
Everyone tells us they are test-ready when they call — but without seeing you drive over time, it’s impossible to judge whether you’re truly safe and prepared.

3️⃣ Test results matter 📋
Every test is recorded against our instructor number and monitored by the DVSA. Presenting someone we haven’t properly assessed can have professional consequences.

4️⃣ The car is our livelihood 🚘
Our vehicle is essential to our business, so allowing someone we’ve never met to use it for a test is simply not worth the risk.

5️⃣ One quick lesson isn’t enough ⏱️
Most instructors want to see consistent driving on different roads and in varied conditions — something that can’t be properly assessed in only a few hours before a test.

✅ In short: It’s very unlikely that an instructor who doesn’t know you will be able to take you to test at short notice — but please don’t take it personally. It’s about safety, fairness, and professionalism.

⚠️ IMPORTANT MESSAGE FOR ALL PUPILS ⚠️

From today, driving instructors can no longer book driving tests on behalf of their pupils.

This means learners now have more control over booking their own tests — but it also increases the risk of pupils booking a test before they are truly ready.

Please read this carefully:

✅ If you want to use my car for your driving test, you MUST check with me BEFORE booking any test date.

There will be absolutely NO exceptions to this.

Booking a driving test without my agreement does NOT guarantee the use of my car.

My car will only be available if:

✅ I believe you are safely and consistently driving at the required standard
✅ I agree that you are genuinely ready for test
✅ I am available on that date and time

This policy is about safety, fairness, and giving you the best possible chance of passing your test.

A driving test should only be booked when you are properly prepared — not simply because a cancellation suddenly appears online.

Please also understand this:

If you book a test without checking with me first, and I either feel you are not ready or I am unavailable, it is extremely unlikely that you will find another instructor willing to take you to test in their car.

Most instructors will not take someone to test that they have not taught themselves.

In addition:

✅ If I agree to your test booking, my instructor number MUST be included at the time of booking.

This is essential to help prevent:
• Test dates clashing with other pupils
• Tests being booked when I am on holiday
• Double bookings or scheduling problems

My instructor number will be provided on request once we have agreed the booking.

Please do not assume a test date is acceptable until you have checked with me first.

🚗 DUAL CARRIAGEWAY… OR NOT? 🤔

This catches so many learners out...

👉 You might see two lanes and assume it’s a dual carriageway… but that’s not always true.

❌ NOT a Dual Carriageway
If there is NO central reservation (no barrier, grass verge, or kerb in the middle)
➡️ It is just a single carriageway, even if it has 2 lanes (or more!)

🛑 Speed limit (cars):
• 60 mph (National Speed Limit)

✅ IS a Dual Carriageway
If there IS a central reservation separating the two directions (barrier, grass, or kerb)
➡️ This makes it a dual carriageway

🚀 Speed limit (cars):
• 70 mph (National Speed Limit)

💡 Paul’s Tip: ✅️
Don’t count lanes…
👉 Look for the central reservation!

That’s what determines the speed limit — and getting this wrong on your test could lead to a fault ⚠️

You’re definitely not alone — these are two of the most commonly forgotten questions on the driving test!

💡 Simple tip that really works:
Create a Post-it note like this and put it somewhere you’ll see it every single day.

📍 Good places to stick it:

On your laptop

On your bedroom mirror

Near your phone charger

Anywhere you look daily

It doesn’t matter where — as long as you see it regularly.

👀 The more you see it, the more it sticks.
Before you know it, you’ll remember the answers without even thinking!

This is one of the easiest ways to lock in those Show Me Tell Me questions before your test 🚗💨
