🚨 A QUICK NOTE ON QUOTES, CASH & "DOING US A FAVOR" 🚨
​I’ve been swinging spanners and getting covered in engine oil since I was 5 years old. As I grew up, my dad taught me from a young age working on cars, trucks, tractors, pushbikes, right up to motorbikes. With nearly three decades of fixing vehicles professionally on top of that, I’ve heard every line in the book... but lately, the "bargaining department" has been working overtime! As if they are trying to limbo dance into a pay toilet. 😂
​So, just to clarify how the pricing works in my workshop...
​When you bring your car in for a job, whether it’s a standard service, fresh brakes, an exhaust, suspension work, undersealing, or an annoying engine light that’s driving you mad, I look at the job, calculate the parts, factor in my own time, and give you a price.
​And almost daily, I get the famous reply:
​“Is that your cash price, mate?”
or
“What can you do if I leave it with you today?”
​Listen, I don’t run a car boot sale, and this isn't Bargain Hunt! 😭🤣
​The price I give you isn't a starting bid. It’s not an opening offer. It’s just... the cost of doing the job properly.
​There seems to be a belief that mechanics have a magic dial under the bench that we can just turn down if you ask nicely.
​“Ah, I see you’ve asked if I can do it cheaper! Silly me, I forgot to apply the 'Customer Asked For A Discount' button! That’ll be £50 off!” 🤣💸
​I wish! But unfortunately:
​• The diagnostic gear costs a lot, especially keeping everything updated (and it doesn't accept "mates rates" for software licenses).
• My tools don't pay for themselves.
• Quality oil and genuine parts aren't free and I refuse to fit eBay crap.
• And undersealing a car leaves me looking like I've been down a coal mine for three days! That effort alone is worth every single penny! 😂
​And for the folks who say: “It’s only a quick 5 minute job, chief!”
​If it’s a 5 minute job, you just crack on and do it yourself! I won't have people dictating a trade I have worked hard at religiously. I've rolled around for hours in the freezing rain in dirt and gravel with supposed "5 minute jobs."
​A lifetime of hands on mechanical experience ensuring your wheel doesn't fly off on the bypass or your brakes actually work safely... that’s what you’re paying for. You aren't just paying for my time; you're paying for decades of knowledge to carry out a job to a professional standard. 😉
​Also, a quick reminder on my recovery trailer:
It is strictly to get your broken down pride and joy back to MY workshop for repairs. It’s not a taxi service for project cars you bought off Marketplace at 11 PM on a Sunday because you’d had four pints and a dream! That's what I use my trailer for minus the pints! 🚛😂 (Previously I did general transportation, but not anymore.)
​I love my trade, I love my regular customers, and I will ALWAYS do right by folk who treat me with respect.
​My real mates and proper regulars know I’ll look after them, keep their cars safe, and charge them a fair day's wage for a fair day's work. They don't try to scrape £20 off my kid's holiday money, and I don't charge them for crap that their car doesn't need.
​So if you want honest, experienced, high quality work done right the first time by someone who’s seen it all, my doors are open (BY APPOINTMENT ONLY)! Please don't just show up expecting me to come away from a paying active job, drop what I'm doing to come see what you've broken, and fix it there and then!

​A quick note on payment: If I have worked on your car, the bill gets settled before you take your car away. Unfortunately, I’m not a bank, I don't do credit, and I’m unable to wait until you decide to pay.

Its been so difficult to put this in words. But here goes 💪🤠👌

A day in a brain that is literally wired for investigative diagnosis, you strip down, you rebuild, you fix. You know how to make things run. But after spending 10+ hours a day using your hands, your back, and your sharpest problem solving skills on everyone else’s broken vehicles, coming home to detach from work and focus on the family when your mentally and physically drained from work can be tough, and it shouldnt be that way.
​Nothing tears you up inside quite like sitting stuck in mental traffic jam in your own head ,running a V8 overthinking ocd brain thats sore on the fuel .
​The most exhausting part isn't the manual labor it's spending all your best problem solving diagnostic energy and tool time fixing everyone else’s problems, while your own life struggles and the vehicle projects sit wasting away on the back burner longing for your undivided attention. You aren't lacking the skill or ability to build something massive , you’re just completely drained from giving your hours to someone problems, leaving only leftover scraps to assemble your own future.
​It’s a crazy kind of punishment knowing you have the horsepower to build an absolute machine of a life, but only having enough time between shifts to turn one bolt a day.
A customer never sees behind the scenes, they dont see how mentally draining being an auto tech actually is. Not every job is black and white. Stripping back the layers to expose the issues demands skill and drive to execute and resolve . But turning one bolt a day still builds the machine. You aint broken, you're just a work in progress. That same relentless mindset that refuses to give up on a job until it's running right is the exact same motivation that will get you where you want to be. The fuel might be low today, but the skill, the fire, and the horsepower aren't going anywhere. Keep believing and having confidence in yourself your time is coming.

Totaling a £1000 car does not constitute purchasing a £17,000 car on tic. They are simply not on the same page. You newer car is just as likely to break , so whats the logic in potentially getting yourself in debt because you couldnt see the value in sorting your old car? Better logic when you total a £1000 car, you buy another £1000 car and maintain it. You look after your car , it should look after you. Best advice is to put away for e.g £20 per week or more. This will get the ball rolling for the maintenance fund. Means when the s**t hits the fan and your car breaks or the servicing schedule comes up. You have a head start financially. Many people will scrimp on a service for there car but spend £200 on a pair of trainers or perfume etc. Some people dont have there priorities cut out .
