Driving instructors often comment that learners drive differently on their test than in lessons.
If you have a test coming up, try to repeat the things you do in normal lessons, as our brains feel less anxious when things feel more familiar:

🎵 If you normally have the radio on low, do the same for your test.
🗣 If you normally talk to yourself out loud during a manoeuvre, do the same for your test.
🍌 If you normally eat a banana before you drive, do the same for your test.

Repeat what you normally do to help keep your brain calmer.

From today, there will be more changes for learner drivers.

Only you can book or manage your car driving test. This means your driving instructor won’t be allowed to book it for you.

When you start to acknowledge your driving successes (no matter how small), you start to retrain your brain and the way you feel about driving.

The success could be that you sat in your car on the driveway for 5 minutes, or it might be a smooth gear change. Find one small positive from every time you drive or are in the car and acknowledge it, recognise it, write it down, tell someone, leave yourself a voice note, but give it the Ta Daaa moment it deserves!

Our brains are better at noticing the negative stuff, so they need a helping hand to remember the good stuff. Find some Ta Daaa moments this weekend and share them in the comments.

Nervous and anxious drivers often get annoyed at themselves and their brains for the thoughts and feelings they have about driving.

For example, you need to drive somewhere new, you don't know the route, and you don't know where to park, and the familiar feelings of anxiety start with a feeling in your stomach and negative thoughts. This is a normal feeling in response to change or uncertainty!

Instead of undervaluing and misinterpreting your brain, maybe we can take a different perspective and acknowledge the amazing job your brain does in keeping you safe.

We can thank our brain for alerting us to the fact that we are doing something new, and respond by planning and preparing the route, looking at Google Maps to see which lanes we might need at roundabouts or junctions. Finding out about parking options, and having a Plan A and a Plan B. You can then reassure your brain that you have the situation under control.

The anxiety you feel is the prompt to get organised, find out more in advance, feel in control, and pay attention and focus on your driving on the new route - all keeping you safe. Your brain is trying to help rather than hinder, so what can you do to feel more in control of the situation?

Just waiting for tonight’s training to start. Watch out everyone next lesson could be different depending on what I learn tonight 😂🚙💨

30/03/2026

📢 Remember that from tomorrow (31 March), you will only be able to make 2 changes to a car driving test booking.

A change counts as:
✅ changing the date or time
✅ changing the test centre
✅ swapping your appointment with another learner who has a test booked

If you need to make more changes after you have used your 2 changes, you will need to cancel your test and book a new one.
