🚗 Ford 1.0 Ecoboost Engine Maintenance - Why It’s Crucial 🚗

At The Timing Co, we recently had a Ford Focus come in with a suspected snapped timing belt. Upon inspection, we discovered the real issue: the teeth on the timing belt had been stripped, causing the engine to go out of time and leading to the pistons hitting the valves. Not good!

We got to work, removing the head, installing new valves and guides, and thoroughly cleaned out all the debris from the timing belt by dropping the sump. It was a detailed job, but this is exactly why regular maintenance is so important for your engine’s longevity.

If you're driving a Ford 1.0 Ecoboost, you need to replace the wet belt on time. Neglecting it can lead to significant damage, just like the case we had with the Focus.

What Is An Ecoboost Engine?

The 1.0L Ecoboost is an-award winning three-cylinder turbocharged petrol direct injected engine and is the smallest within the EcoBoost range.

The 1 litre Ecoboost engine was first introduced in 2012 on Focus and C-Max models. It was lauded as it offered power and performance that compared to a traditional 1.6 litre petrol engine.

Downsizing using an engine boasting ultra-low friction, high-efficiency and a durable design proved successful and Ford began to include this engine as an option for many more models. The 1 litre version of the EcoBoost engine is available on the following models:

❗️WET BELT ISSUES ❗️

This problem has been emerging for some time in addition to the coolant and oil issues (what problems DOESN’T the Ecoboost have?)

The Ford 1.0 EcoBoost engine (Fiesta, Focus, B Max and some Ford Connect vans) is run by a wet belt inside the engine as opposed to a timing belt outside of the engine. Ford recommend it should be replaced at 150,000 miles or 10 years.

Many of you have seen the belt disintegrate, sometimes ruining the engine, or needing replacement well before 150k miles.

This post is designed to capture how many people have experienced the wet belt issue.
