With the temperature dipping to more comfortable levels, 10 keen slot racers brought their well fettled hard bodied race cars for some slightly slower than normal racing at the Oaklands Ring this Wednesday.
First up was Tin Tops, with this round counting towards the Oaklands Cup. Lapmaster randomly chose the finals and in the first James Noake from Black Country Slot Car Raceway kept his car on the track more than Stephen Rhodes to take the win with Barrie Wildfat Gregory taking third place. The second final saw the best race of the night with the lead swapping many times before Paul Stokes had one too many offs letting Duncan Bullock through to take the win with Steve Talbot third. The third final was a battle of the Daves with Dave Warren taking the win from David Beeching followed by Nigel Pedley and wife Emma. The overall positions are as per the photo.
Last week's report didn't state that we were also racing our NSR F1 class tonight and consequently some racers didn't bring this class. We would urge all our racers to check the calendar at the top of our page for the scheduled racing - we don't want anybody missing out on the fun!
With the field reduced to eight, Lapmaster randomly selected the two off finals. First up Steve R took the win from Barrie (who had finally found that Kyosho pit box he'd been looking for), Duncan and Steve T (who'd supplied mini donuts and biscuits to celebrate his upcoming birthday). The second final saw James put in a stunning performance that may be a club record for this class. Dave B was second, Paul third and Dave W fourth with a borrowed car. Forty years ago this coming Bank Holiday Weekend the streets of Birmingham came alive to the sound of the The Birmingham Superprix. To celebrate this historic event we are holding a one off special race on August 26th. We will be racing cars from that period kindly supplied by M & V Models Our Place. We will also be raffling off some fantastic prizes donated by Scalextric, these are cars from the era when they roared around the streets of Birmingham. It will be a simple race, 3mins on each of the four lanes featuring different cars. The winner will receive a bag of scratchins and a can of Brummie beer. Sure to be another great night, come and join us for some proper Brummie fun!

The fast wide bodied 1/24th cars always create chaos, incidents and fun 😂 Last nights racing was no different. With usual race controller Stephen Rhodes feeling unwell (get well soon Steve) we took it in turns to press the start button with Flo keen to take her turn keeping everyone on track. After a delayed start, David Beeching who had only put together his car at the last moment, raced into an overall unassailable lead, with over 150 laps on the board. Barrie Wildfat Gregory stormed into second place, even a pit stop to change gears unable to stop his very fast pace. Steve Talbot took a well deserved third place by being fast and quick without hardly, if at all, coming out of the slot. Paul Stokes and Dave Warren had a ding d**g of a battle with the ever improving Paul beating Dave by just a quarter of a lap. Matthew Lukeman and daughter Flo are both gaining experience, changing controllers to get the best results and both getting faster as the night went on. It was great to see Doug Pinkerton again, who once again is also improving on the Oaklands track and joining in with the Oaklands banter that makes the racing such good fun. Now I did mention at the start that 1/24th racing leads to a lot of incidents and unfortunately it was Duncan Bullock turn to suffer last night. In practice he tested his new car, and it flew around the track, but, come race time it was a different story. First off was a delayed technical hitch at the start of the race, then (no names mentioned 😂) other drivers decided to shall we say help him off the track. Last but not least his car started stuttering, so, a few pit stops were needed to make it the finish. Not Duncans best night through no fault of his own, (he did set an incredibly fast lap time though !) but we all know next time will be a different story 😉
Next week it's rubber tyres on our saloons (Tin Tops), this one counting towards the Oaklands Championship.

Later this month on Wednesday August 26th we are holding a special race to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the The Birmingham Superprix. Maybe, like us, you remember when the streets of Birmingham were filled with the loud noise of roaring engines as racing cars sped through the City Centre.
We will be racing a variety of specially prepared Scalextric cars from that period (80's/90's) kindly supplied by M & V Models Our Place. We are also pleased to announce Scalextric have kindly gifted us some fantastic special gift packs of cars which we will be raffling on the night.

Wednesday afternoon saw the installation of a second monitor by Dave Warren, Mick Metcalfe and Stephen Rhodes together with a few other updates in the clubroom. Dave W and Steve R couldn't make the BSCRA saloon racing that followed but there were 12 entrants trying their best for a win.
Fastest lap qualifying was used to see who raced who.
In the C final it was a battle of 2 families with Nigel Pedley and wife Emma winning from Flo and dad Matthew Lukeman from M & V Models Our Place. Nigel's total gained him seventh place overall. Some very close racing - great to watch.
In the B final sandbagger David Beeching took an easy win that gave him third place overall. The ever improving Paul Stokes took second place (6th overall) from visitor Doug Pinkerton from Black Country Slot Car Raceway and Steve Talbot who struggled this week.
The A final saw another visitor James Noake put in a blistering performance to take the win from Mick who was not that far behind. Third place went to Duncan Bullock and fourth to Barrie Wildfat Gregory both having very quick cars.
Next week it's 1/24 sports - start sharpening those elbows!

If you pay a visit to our club room, pass by a model shop, or been to a slot car event you may have noticed our new posters.
Last year for our Open Day Marc Abbott kindly offered to design posters to to get our event noticed. It certainly did ! and we had many comments about the colourful and well designed posters. So, when we wanted to update our club room walls there was only one person to ask. Many thanks to Marc along with Ric Woods who design and produce Slot Car Magazine for helping us out yet again. Another hot Wednesday night attracted 9 slot car racers to the Oaklands Ring for a bit of hard bodied racing.
First up was Tiddlers and we used Lapmaster to randomly select who raced who in the 3 finals. These cars are only 54mm wide and our members work very hard to try and get the best out of such a small package. That work paid off for Duncan Bullock by winning the first final with 88.85 laps achieving second place overall. Not far behind was Paul Stokes with his improved car and Matthew Lukeman a few laps behind him. David Beeching puts a lot of work into his car and it shows, he won the second final and the overall race with 92.08 laps. Second was Dave Warren followed by Steve Talbot. The last final was won by Stephen Rhodes from Barrie Wildfat Gregory who was running a new car and Flo from M & V Models Our Place not far behind. The overall results are as per the photo.
Next up was hard bodied Libre and Lapmaster was again used to randomly select who raced who. The first final was won by Steve R with 99.54 laps - good enough to take the overall win. Not far behind was Dave W obtaining second place overall. Close behind was Barrie with another new car. Dave B narrowly won the second final from Duncan by about a lap. Third was Matt using a very pretty lit up Porsche. The third final saw Steve T take a narrow win from Paul by about a lap. Flo was third and produced some very quick lap times. The overall results are as per the photo.
We would like to thank Dave W, Paul and Flo for taking a turn at race control - much appreciated!
Next week we'll be turning the dials up to 11 for BSCRA saloon.

This Wednesday we raced BSCRA F2 - this attracted 9 racers from far and wide. We had a welcome visit of David Ensor from Leicester Electricity Slot Car Club plus a welcome return of Matthew Lukeman from M & V Models Our Place. Fastest lap qualifying was again used to populate the 3 finals.
Once sorted we went straight into the C final. This was won by Barrie Wildfat Gregory from Paul Stokes who like many others has yet to completely master red lane - keep at it Paul. Third was Matt who used an old club F2 as his own was unavailable.
In the B final, Steve Talbot has really mastered the settings on his recently acquired Carsteen controller and drove superbly to take the win from Duncan Bullock. Third was Dave E who would surely have finished higher up the field with a full compliment of front wheels!
The A final was won by Stephen Rhodes debuting his new Mack chassis just ahead of David Beeching using an earlier Mack chassis. Third was Dave Warren who qualified well and finished with 116+ laps as did 2 other drivers.
The overall results are as per the photo. Next week it's hard bodied Tiddlers and hard bodied Libre.

Wednesday's 1/32 BSCRA Sports was the 4th event out of 8 in the Oaklands Park Trophy competition and the table showing handicap adjusted laps is as shown. Also included is a table indicating the current championship positions. These have been calculated using 10 points for a win, 9 points for second all the way down to 1 point for 10th. Remember only the best 5 from 8 results will count towards to challenge, so there is still lots of opportunities to improve your current position. The point scoring events to come are:-
1/32 Hard Body Tin Tops, 1/24 BSCRA Sports, 1/32 Hard Body Libre and 1/32 BSCRA F2.
