All windows and doors were fully open on one of the hottest days of the year, as six regular members raced their hard-bodied F1 and Tin Top cars around the Oaklands Park circuit. Half-term holidays, busy work schedules, and the race controller feeling unwell at the last moment (hope you’re feeling better, Stephen Rhodes) meant our numbers were a little less than usual. However, that didn’t stop a great night of close and competitive racing.
First up was F1 with everyone using NSR cars. The first heat saw a good win for David Beeching with Steve Talbot taking second place from Paul Stokes. The next heat saw Duncan Bullock speed off into an early lead, hotly pursued by Barrie Wildfat Gregory, but as their tyres started struggling for grip, Dave Warren was able to peg them both back and take not only the heat win but also overall first place.
A quick break for tea, water, and warm, gooey Tunnocks, and we were ready for Tin Tops. Steve T was racing his new car, purchased at the recent Gaydon Slot festival, however, it was Dave Beeching who took his revenge on Dave Warren by beating him into second place and winning not only the heat but also overall first place. The second heat followed, and Barrie and Duncan were pushing each other strongly, but then Paul, with his new Thunderslot Shelby Mustang, found his feet. With his best drive so far since joining the club, he sprinted past both to take the heat win and finish third overall, his first podium finish. Well done Paul!
Next week we return to sponge tyres and Lexan bodies with Intro 32 cars, followed by our inaugural Le Mans event the week after on June 10th.
We race all types of slot cars and have great fun, why not come along and join us? We meet every Wednesday from 7.30 pm onwards.
